I have been thinking about changing my i7 4790s to an i7 4790k, I will recover the money by selling the i7 4790s since it still has a good price. However, I am not sure if it is worth changing it. I mainly use the computer for gaming and some virtual machines.Being honest, sometimes I feel like I dont have the performance that I should get even if it is not that noticeable, not sure if the 3.2Ghz of the i7 4790s are bottle-necking the GPU. With that said, since I have WC I could OC the i7 4790k if I get it (would be first time overclocking). Here is my build:

-i7 4790s
-Gigabyte Z97 mx gaming 5
-16 GB Ram ~1600
-Gigabyte G1 980ti
-Corsair H110i GT
-Corsair RM 850

What do you guys think? Should I go for it? I know, that the difference wouldn't be too much... But maybe could be a good idea so I can start overclocking? Please share your thoughts.

EDIT: Added PSU

Hi,

Yes, you should buy the i7 4790K, like Andrei-Florin mentioned, if you are not loosing that much money go for it, remember the i7 4790K can turbo boost to 4.4Ghz

The i7 4790 has a base clock of 3.6Ghz, not 3.2Ghz, and Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz, more often 3.9Ghz on games. The i7 4790K has a base clock of 4.0Ghz and a Turbo Boost of 4.4Ghz, again, more likely 4.3Ghz on games.

For gaming, the systems are complex and, in general, you should expect to see about half the clock difference as an improvement (Increase the clock by 10% and see 5% faster gaming) If the cost is small and since you have a good motherboard, I too would upgrade. You also have a good cooler too.

If you can move your memory on, I would want to upgrade to 2400Mhz Muskin Redline or G.Skill Trident X for another moderate performance increase.

When you get the new CPU is will be simple to set Turbo Boost on all the time for a simple overclock that will run the chip at 4.4Ghz. I have overclocked two of these chips and got both the 4.8Ghz, although for safety and long life, I run them at 4.6Ghz 24/7.

What is your PSU?

EDIT. Sorry, I missed the 4790s (I read it as plural) rather than 4790S.

The Base clock is indeed 3.2Ghz, but the turbo remains 4.0 and mostly 3.8 to 3.9 for gaming. Apart from that, what I said above stands.

Yes, actually the change would be something like $15 if I am correct so that it not an issue.

Oh, I missed the PSU in the first post. It is a Corsair RM 850, is it enough? Also, I didn't know that the RAM's would make such difference. I am a noob about the OC topic, are those RAM modules already overclocked or is there something that needs to be done? Sorry for the newbie question.

You motherboard will support a XMP profile and you will be able to turn on a 'switch' in BIOS that will let you run fast memory at 2400Mhz. It is also possible to overclock further, but for limited benefit. I have Trident X and have gotten it to just over 2600Mhz, but run it at 2400 24/7.

You made a wise choice. The Corsair RM850 gold is a good PSU and plenty powerful enough for what you want.

He's talking about the i7 4790s which does have a base clock of 3.2ghz,but still will boost via turbo up to 4ghz.
There's a difference in how many cores boost up to a certain speed, can compare here,
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/processors/000005523.html
4th gen.
Difference for instance,the 4790 can do 3.9 with 3 cores,the 4790s can do 3,9 with 2 cores.

You will notice that I corrected when I realized the OP meant 4790S., and many games will use two cores, which is why I qualified my answer although I may have messed up fixing all the errors.

Well looking at the question do i hesitate to advice to upgrade, depends on what he needs to spend extra to obtain the 4790K.He should be able to make that 4790s go turbo on all cores with the motherboard he has. It's spending money on a "feeling" of not getting a certain performance,

sometimes I feel like I dont have the performance that I should get even if it is not that noticeable
it's hard to quantify a feeling.

Sorry to hear that,my problem is probably being too lazy to read all of the answer/post before giving my opinion.😛 My "problem" is much easier to resolve.
