Hi all

So I am currently waiting for the new Ryzen hopefully in the next couple of months. My current setup is I7 4930K overclock at 4.4 1.3v 64GB (1600) RAM, GTX 1080 with the Predator 27 IPS 144 1440p monitor. I do both VM server works and heavy gaming. Recently I have been playing Far Cry 5 and Division 2 and noticed that my frame rate average in the 70s and sometimes dip below 60. I am wondering if my CPU is holding me back or simply the GTX 1080 is at its max? I plan on using my current rig solely for work and build a new rig just for gaming once Ryzen is released. But for now, should I get the RTX 2080 to achieve higher fps? Will I need to overclock my CPU further to drive 2080? I could get a better cooler and push for more overclock, but it seems that anything over 4.4 will require a 1.4v or above... Thanks

IPC work of your processor is still pretty good and it has enough cores to survive few years yet. 70ish fps is about right from your 1080.

With top end Intel CPUs today theres probably an extra 10~15fps difference, Ryzen's do perform well they don't get as high fps, not with this generation. Test system wasn't mentioned in the article but an 8700k 5GHz was apparently used according to the comments.

Ryzen 3's IPC is rumoured to be very good so I'd wait for reviews because it could end up being a side grade from your 4930k. I think buy a 2080 now, your CPU will still handle it. Looking at roughly 20 to 30fps gain compared to the 1080.

Then check CPU usages while gaming if you decide to get the 2080. More fps = more CPU frame pre-rendering meaning increased CPU usage. If your CPU isn't pegged at 100% usage it's doing a good job.

OK, thanks for the reply. Honestly, if I can get above 80 or at least stable above mid 70 at ultra 1440p I think I will be happy and probably won't even need a new rig.... So the I7 4930k at 4.4 is enough to handle rtx 2080 at 1440p? Does it make sense to push it for 4.5 or 4.6 at above 1.4v? I only ask b/c I read somewhere, forgot the link, mentioned that 4930k do not have enough horsepower for 2080 and the GPU was at max during the game benchmark. Just so I fully understand this concept, gpu not above 90% and cpu near max = CPU bottleneck? or Anytime when gpu is not above 90% = cpu bottleneck? I am able to pull the trigger and get it from amazon now. Sorry I know i asked a lot of questions, but thanks

Asking questions is fine

4.4GHz is fine, there'll only be maybe 1 or 2 fps difference between 4.4 to 4.6.

4790k is better single core performance because of it's higher base clock, with your CPU overclocked this performance gap is pretty moot. Extra cores/threads (6cores/12threads) will hold it's own weight in games today especially Farcry 5, less chance of running higher CPU usages which will also limit frame output. 4 cores/ 8 threads is pretty much minimum requirement these days.

Regarding usages, GPU can work 100%, just don't want the CPU reaching 100%, it'll bring on stutters and restrict the graphics card.

See this video. Battlefield is pretty CPU intensive and gives you an idea what frame rates do to even modern CPUs.

OK, so i got my MSI RTX 2080 game x trio today. My Division 2 instantly got around 90-102 fps, gpu usuage 98% cpu around 65%. However, Far Cry 5 I am only getting 86fps 1440p ultra. So I did some check and realized that GPU usage was around 70-80%, in my windows I see all individual cores running around 60-80% usage. So is my CPU bottlenecking in Far Cry 5? I find it hard to believe Far Cry 5 is more intensive than Division 2......lost

ok, yea. that makes sense. I can live with and extend my system for a couple more years. I just test Battlefield V, Exodus getting average 100-120 ultra 1440p. Just amazing how a year old game still this demanding lol. Thanks for the help.

BTW, is 1.395 V bad for the CPU? I can hit 4.5 with that, I know performance/power consumption is not making sense to do it, but am just curious. I saw a forum where people say keep it under 1.35v then another forum mentioned 1.4v being the safe spot. I am planning to keep my rig for a couple more years and then retire it from gaming and will solely be used for VM server/data warehouse works only. So if I up it to 1.395 for 4.5, will it be damaging for the longevity of the chip? I built this rig in 2013 and has been running the CPU at 4.4 with1.305 since. With the RTX 2080 running at 2010 MHz core and 8000 MHz ram, I see my CPU usage in Division at 80%+ (sometimes will peak to 96 on one of the cores)
