Question I7 4970k 100ºC of temperature

Hello!! I have the computer bellow since March 2015:

MSI ATX DDR3 2600 LGA 1150 Motherboards Z97-G45 GAMING
Kingston HyperX FURY 8GB Kit (4x4GB) 1600MHz DDR3 CL10 DIMM - Blue (HX316C10FK2/8) = TOTAL 16GB
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 Overclocked GDDR5 Pcie Video Graphics Card, 4GB
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E250B/AM)
Intel Core i7-4790K Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.40 GHz) (BX80646I74790K)

I had never done maintenance, cleaning, or passing thermal paste. I have stopped playing CS GO for a year. I decided to comeback at the end of last year and could not reach the patent I was (maximum patent: global elite).
I started to realize that my computer was geting some FPS drops and this, definitively, was disrupting my gameplay.
Overall the game run at 250fps but when computer needs do render more things, like bombs or players, the screen freezer for milliseconds. This happen very often (every 10 seconds).


I sent my PC to tecnical maintenance, it really was very dirty. I got some improvement but it is not the same like 3 years ago. I disabled a C States option (just for test) in the BIOS and the FPS DROPS was solved, however the computer displayed a blue screen (crashed) in 3 minutes of game. Then I just turned it on as it was by default.

Then I tried to do a PC gamer optimization that I found on Youtube and tested for 2 days (does not change the BIOS / OC, only configures Windows to work in performance mode).
I noticed a great improvement. The freezes just ran away.


Detail: those 4 years that I have this PC, I never had problem with blue screen or shutdown due to overheating. It always worked normal, except for the FPS DROPS, which is recent.


So I decided to monitor my pc temp. See below:


Only with Chrome and Spotify open:

After playing a game of CS GO:

On the print screen does not have the GPU temp, but hit 79ºC. Is this a safe temp for GTX 970?

I did some research and lot of people complaining about it. As you can not see above, I ended up not buying a special cooler. I'm using the 4970k default. Was that a mistake?

Any tips or help I would be very grateful.

You might also want to replace the thermal paste on your cpu. Usually it's recommended to replace it every 2 years or so. By now it's probably all caked up and hard as hell which may cause thermal temperatures to go through the roof and cause intermittent crashes etc.. You might want to invest in a noctua air cooler down the line since that will really help as well, Good luck!

I think that's a safe temp for a GTX 970. The spec is 98C.

...but if your CPU is 100C (as is in your title). I think that's too hot.

I have two coolers in mind: Cooler Master 212 EVO and Corsair H100i V2 Hydro.

Here in Brazil, CM 212 is a half cheaper. I don't know why, but as I said above, my cpu temp is achieving 100ºC.

Does worth paying for a H100i meant that I do not OCed my CPU?

If you have another cost benefit Cooler in mind, let me know.
