Hello Guys
I am upgrading my graphics card and was looking to upgrading my cpu. I have an Asus z87i Pro the mini itx motherboard paired with an i5 4670k. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to upgrade my i5 to a i7 4790k or would it be better to upgrade the motherboard with the cpu.
Thanks guys
Regards

Love those ITX builds.

I see little advantage in changing out your motherboard. Z87 with a current bios update should let you run the i7-4790K just fine.
I did just that when they first came out.
You should be able to overclock, but the higher stock clock speeds make that not much worthwhile.
Cooling in a ITX case is always a problem.

If your usage is for gaming, a 4690K should be plenty.
The graphics card is the key component for that.

OTOH, if your usage is rendering or other cpu bound multithreaded tasks, a i7-4790K is as good as it gets.

If the price differential is not a bother, go ahead.
I did that too, but since I had a market for the old build, I did get a new Z97 motherboard.

4xxxk is 1150 socket. your z87 supports 1155 socket ivy or sandy bridge. so no your cant. and there wouldn't be any point anyways, just get a 3570k/3770k. no point in ditching a perfectly fine z87 board.
