i7 4th gen vs i5 6th gen

I built a desktop pc with 8gb of ddr3 ram, a gfx 960 4g oc and an i7 4790, my friend says that i should have gotten a 6th gen i5 instead. Was he right? Keep in mind that I use my PC for gaming, 3D modeling, rendering, video editing and programming among other things.

no hes not because the difference between the 4th and 6th gen is slim.
also you will benefit more from an i7 , due the hyperthreading feature for edditing rendering.
