i7 5820k best O/C you've seen?

Hi all,

I've got my 5820k @ 4.5ghz (45x multi) @ 1.3v - totally stable, I've not attempted to lower the voltage and test further. Idles in the 30s - not seen it go above 60oc. It's on the MSI gaming 7 x99 board.

I was wondering what the best O/C from the 5820 is you've seen or point me in the direction of some results/forum as I'm keen to see what I can get from this.

4.5G is a nice OC imo and i wouldnt go any higher for 24/7. Mine does 4.5G @ 1.22v with NH-D14 gives max core temp around 75° during OCCT. Seen you havent seen it go above 60, means you are not stress testing. I strongly advise do try lowering vcore and do some stress testing (do NOT use prime95 > v26.6).

If it helps the cooling I'm using is the corsair h110i iirc.

According to what I've seen what is considered a "good" overclock on a 5820K is 4.5ghz, a "decent/average" is about 4.4ghz, any lower and you've hit a bad silicon lottery. And what would be considered a "very good" OC would be 4.6ghz or so (on air or with an AIO liquid cooler, with a good fully custom water loop i'd say 4.7ghz is possible but any higher than is pushing it) Essentially the extra 2 cores on the 5820K give it a slightly lower average overclock compared to an I7 4820K or 4790K; although the 4790K is typically a little lower than the 4820K due to having internal thermal paste, so i'd say 4.6ghz is a good 4790K limit, whereas the 4820K tops out at 4.8ghz on a good sample. This is why the 5960X has a lower stock speed of 3.0Ghz and doesn't overclock quite as well, typically hitting around 4.4ghz on a "Good" one or 4.5ghz on a very good sample.


(note that these numbers aren't the "extreme" top of the line insane overclocks that people with 5 radiator liquid cooling or phase change using 1.4v nearly burning the chip up for a max overclock etc.. i'm talking about top stable OC where you can still game and surf the web etc.. without it burning up or crashing after a couple hours)

UPDATE: I OC my RAM from 2133 Hrz to 2600 Hrz for a performance gain of 5.2%

This is a must for me because I can achieve stable clock under burn with the same results and it de-clocks my CPU and CPU cache ratio when the PC is not being used. Essential to a longer life span.

What are your CPU temperatures under full load? Preferably Prime95 v. 26.6 or ROG Realbench?

I use a Corsair H115i Water Block and the intel burn test at the highest setting and my temps spring to 90C MAX AND that is with my Corsair water cooler jacked to performance on both the pump itself and the 240mm fans. With every day use I top at 48C MAX with the corsair cooler set to "balanced" mode on the fans and pump. Regular "everyday use" for me includes high end video gaming while multitasking the chrome browser (running videos in YouTube), a private TS server, and multiple fan control software's. I also do 4K video editing. My current idle temps as of writing this are at 33C average. Ambient temps vary but the max is 25C or less.
