What could be the desktop equivalent of the laptop CPU i7 6700HQ and GPU GT X 960M?
Also is it better to buy a gaming laptop with these specs or build a PC with the same budget?

Solution
Hello,

The i7-6700HQ shows to be on par with the much older i7-2600.

The GTX 960M is about 10% slower than a desktop GTX 750 Ti.

Also compared Passmark scores.

Also compared Passmark socres, GTX 750 Ti is superior to 960M.

It would be better to build a far superior desktop with the same (or less) budget as far as performance goes.
I can't say for certain what 6700HQ is equivalent to (from the specs, it's a lower clocked i7-6700), but 960M is less powerful than a desktop GTX 950.

On the same budget, custom PCs are always better than laptops, except in cases where you really need the portability of laptops.

I think he is. Some games use more multi-core than they do single-core, in which case the i7 would perform better than the i3-7100. Most games do use the single-core more, in which case the i3-7100 would perform better than either of the i7s mentioned.

But it is a good point that he could build a much cheaper PC with an i3-7100 and a GTX 1050 and get better performance than the laptop with an i7-6700HQ and GTX 960M.

like stated above, i7 6700hq is on par with i7 2600 on multi-core tasks, and gtx 960m is about equal to 750 ti. If you only have a budget to get such a laptop then I would recommend building a desktop, however I believe you shouldn't get the i3 7100, instead try the Pentium G4560. Much cheaper and performance doesnt lack behind too much when paired with 1050. and assuming your build, I dont think you need super high frame rate and in that case the pentium should suffice for 30-60fps gaming depends on the game. I would also recommend to instead get the 1050ti as it's a better value than 1050
