Hello everyone, I have a problem.
I'm new to overclocking cpu, but I overclocked GPU which is easy. I have a i7-6700K and a cooler CM Hyper 212X. First I tried to overclock to 4.4Ghz and cpu voltage was set to auto. It was fine, maybe a freeze or two but mostly ok. Then I tried changing to 4.6Ghz and cpu voltage to 1.35v and I got a freeze the second I turned on prime95. I tried putting 1.40v and 4.6Ghz, prime95 ran for like few minutes, temp were at 80c and then it crashed(bsod). I tried 4.5v and 4.6Ghz and temps were at 95c immediately, so I stopped it right away. Is there something wrong with the cooler, am I doing something wrong or what? I would like to get at least 4.6Ghz if not 4.8Ghz. And when I overclock there are freezes or bsod's, its random. If you need any more information let me know.

These are all the BSODs I got, click here

Tomie_,

Do NOT run any versions of Prime95 later than 26.6. Here's why:

Core i 2nd through 6th Generation CPU's have AVX (Advanced Vector Extension) instruction sets. Recent versions of Prime95, such as 28.9, run AVX code on the Floating Point Unit (FPU) math coprocessor, which produces unrealistically high temperatures. The FPU test in the utility AIDA64 shows similar results.

Prime95 v26.6 produces temperatures on 3rd through 6th Generation processors more consistent with 2nd Generation, which also have AVX instructions, but do not suffer from thermal extremes due to having a soldered Integrated Heat Spreader and a significantly larger Die.

Run only Small FFT’s for 10 minutes.

Use Core Temp to measure your temperatures - http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp

Your Core temperatures will test 10 to 20C lower with v26.6 than with v28.9.
