My specs:
Motherboard: asus z170-a, latest bios
CPU: i7 6700k stock speeds
CPU cooler: CM hyper evo 212
PSU: Segotep 550 gtr
8 MB Kingston hyperx
GPU: Asus NVidia gtx 960 strix OC
Prime95 version used: 28.7

My cpu core temps idles at 25-27 C with an ambient temperature of 23-24C. Running prime95 Small FFTs 15 mins i get a constant 90C on core0, a few degrees fewer at the rest of cores (1,2,3), turbo boost on at 4215 GHz, 100% usage an all 8 threads. It seems to me that the temperatures are too high. The cooler is seated ok, cleaned it twice, and reseated it twice, just to be ok.
I read that i shouldn't use the latest prime version because AVX overload/heat.

What should i do? What am i doing wrong?

Solution

Talk to Intel/ your purchase point and RMA it

There's absolutely nothing wrong. Prime95 28.5 and newer uses instructions that cause the CPU to get very warm and a 212 EVO just isn't powerful enough to keep the CPU cooler; nothing else will get the CPU that hot. Try version 26.6 and your CPU probably won't get hotter than 70°C. Since it doesn't reach 100°C on that stress test, then the cooler does its job.

Thank you both for the replies. Indeed after using prime 95 v 26.6, updating bios (asus pushed a bios update 3 days ago), i'm hiting 75C, with a pretty bad chassis ventilation. I would say this is as good as it gets :)
