Hello guys and girls.
I dont know where to start.

Okay, System specs firs:
ASUS Maximus Hero VIII Z170
Intel i7 6700k
EVGA 980ti SC+
G.Skill 3200mhz 16GB(2x8)
NZXT Kraken x61 AIO
Samsung 850 PRO 250GB
Corsair RM1000i
NZXT Noctis 450

I just contacted Intel support guy on live chat and his knowledge was non existent. I'm still pissed.

Soo. 4 months ago I started to build my new PC, part by part, each month 2 parts and about a month ago I had everything and was ready to put it all together.
Everything went smoothly, up untill I saw those crazy CPU temperature spikes on idle that 200 people on this forum are talking about, 200 threads yeah.
So I contacted Intel, and as soon as he heard what was going on he told me, SEND CPU TO US, we will send you a new one. I said okay, good guy intel. 10 days later, CPU arrived, 'problem' was still there. So I contacted Asus, thought it was maybe Motherboard sensor problem and that it sends wrong information. Asus also sent new Motherboard within two weeks. Still same thing.

What to do what to do? www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum
Might be Asus motherboard setting voltage too high on stock ? Almost 1.5 VOLTS under load, WHAAAA ?? 1.38-1.45 IDLE ? Jesus. ASAP i went to BIOS and set it to 1.20, Crashed under Intel stress test, so I set it to 1.25, works like charm. Zero spikes on idle, some spikes under heavy load(Intel stress test) but nothing above 53 degrees celsius. Which is normal.

My question is.
When i changed voltage i set it to Manual and set 1.25. I have heard its prefered to put it on Offset/Adaptive mode, and that maybe manual should be avoided(don't know why but ok). ?
I need some help with that.

And now, what i mentioned up here, is what guy at Intel Live Chat told me.
He told me to run diagnostics, so i did.
And when i asked him what should i do about crazy voltages and that i already set it to manual at 1.25 instead of freakin 1.5 volts, he kept saying that i should put it on auto and let it work like that.
Even tho i told him that CPU package under load(intel burn in test) at 1.5v hits almost 80 degrees celsius, and that isnt acceptable with this AIO. He said i should put it on auto because if i manually changed voltage that i overclocked it, but all i did was undervolt it so CPU doesnt die within first few months. Then he said again, put it on auto because i shouldnt touch voltage if i didnt overclock it. That guy had no idea what i was talking about. He didnt even knew what Kraken x61 is.
I told him that i will send him fried CPU after 3 months on 1.5, and he told me, Ok, send it we will send new one.

There is absolutely no way that I'm going to wait another 10 days after freaking 4 months without a PC.

Sorry for a long post and some useless informations but i had to.

Any help is appreciated.

Solution
I prefer manual, but I also don't leave my system running. I would use adaptive offsets if you want the system to idle properly.

The more I hear about the Skylake Hero the less I want one or a 200 series board with that name. I have the z87 version and it is solid as a rock.

SLI problems is another one I hear about a lot with that board.

I think you have made the right decision to undervolt. But you could go ahead and overclock to find the best balance of voltage to clock frequency in your temperature range.

80C isn't the end of the world, but is a little warm. As long as you aren't seeing spikes up in the 90s it should be okay. 1.5 volts at stock, on the other hand, seems very high indeed. 1.4 ish is what I usually see out there.

This board is known to have wild voltage controls....with out of date BIOS from like a year ago.

No mention of you updating the BIOS, so I'm going to say that is your problem.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Few more people warned me about this too. I wanted MSI Gaming M7 so much, but at the end there was not a single shop in my country that actually had it, so i got this one.

Well, I might overclock it, but then again i don't really need all that horsepower atm. Runs all i threw at it with no problems. I think I will test it at 4.5-4.6 though.
There was zero spikes over 56 degrees now with voltage at 1.25v with intel burn in test.

I had the plan to go for SLI, but damn if i start to experience some problems with SLI, i will request an RMA and sell in instantly.

I just typed 6700k temp spike and google was full of threads like this :D

First Motherboard i got had 1402 BIOS, so i updated to 1902 and saw no difference.
Now this second one Asus sent me has 1702 and i still did not touch it, i dont even know if there is any newer BIOS, but I'm going to try and update it soon.

Thank you!

I have problems with my hardware too...

When i don't update the BIOS even though i bought it from a shop that had it on their shelves for god knows how long.

Update your BIOS, flash your firmware. Your router, your phone, your microwave, and ESPECIALLY your motherboards.

Well, i just updated my BIOS to the latest version.
Same thing again.
Gonna put voltage at 1.25v again.

I have no idea what should i do.

Reminds me of my Rampage Formula III, had to plan my moves to get into the BIOS and change the core voltage before it overtemped and rebooted. Stock cooler couldn't take the default voltage ASUS had set. 1.35 volt on a i7-960. Ended up undervolting and overclocking that thing to 3.67Ghz up from 3.067Ghz at a cool 1.19 volts.

Damn, seems like Asus has so many similar problems with alot of their boards. And i was worried about MSI bad QC. Haha

Anyway, should i go for Adaptive mode or leave it on manual at 1.25 ? Or try lower. I wont OC yet.

I just tried adaptive mode. Set voltage to 1.25v, did intel stress test since i dont like prime95 and everything works perfectly, atleast i think so.

Temperatures dropped slightly, to mid 20es, under full load its about 53-54 with kraken on Silent mode. Some cores stay 10 degrees lower, around 44-45.
Idle voltage drops to 0.8v(spikes to 0.95v) and under load it jumps between 1.184v and 1.216v. Thats 0.36 lower than i set it manually. Awsum.
Temperature spikes are still there, and every program reads them differently so i cant exactly tell you the exact CPU temperature, only intel tool jumps from 44 to 53 degrees.

Is this alright ?
