Alright here's the situation.
I want to build my pc and want it to be future proof (at least 6-7 years) since I am going back to school and will not have a very good income being a student. So considering that, i was thinking of buying the new slylake cpu and go with the ddr4.

My question is should I wait a little longer, buy the 6700k or just go with the 4790k? At some point i will have to add a gpu and ram probably but does the 6700k look promising to you all ?

Solution
I'd probably get the 6700K with the Z170 platform.

The reasons for this are pretty straightforward:

1) In a few years, DDR3 won't be made anymore. It'll be much easier to upgrade RAM if you can use DDR4 instead of having to buy last-gen DDR3.

2) Z170 has better support for 32Gb/s M.2 PCIe SSDs than Z97. Compared to SATA/600, it's not even a fair fight. And with more lanes on the PCH, this means you don't need to make awkward compromises between PCIe cards and M.2 ports.

3) USB3.1. Z170 simply has more of them, again due to the PCH having more PCIe lanes... which is ultimately due to DMI 3.0 (4GB/s) instead of DMI 2.0 (2GB/s) connectivity between the chipset and CPU.

Solution
the 6700k is nice, but it's the new chipset that is the jewel, so many options to chose in what the compagnies implement in their mobo.
.
to future proof you should get a least usb3.1 for the news usb key
but you can have that in the latest Z97 chipset

No pc is future proof for 6-7 years.

The I7-6700K and a Z170 motherboard is as close as you are going to get.
The prices are comparable, and gen6 is simply better.
Unless you have a compelling need to buy TODAY, wait a week or so for all parts to become available.
You can order motherboards and ram now.
