Hey guys , i have i7 6800k and asrock x99 taichi motherboard, the issue is that intel says it has 3.6ghz turbo boost and when i run prime95 it reaches 3.4 max and for some application it is 3.5ghz , why is there difference in frequency? and why isnt it reaching 3.6, and i have xmp profile enabled and not even able to get 4ghz stable after overclocking. please someone help.

Turbo is a clever system that allows the CPU to sometimes run faster than its stock frequency (3.4ghz) if power and temperature allows for it. The fewer cores you have running, the higher it will clock.

On the i7 4790K, just as an example, it's a "4ghz/4.4ghz" CPU. It has an 88w TDP, and it can stay under that with 1 core running at 4.4ghz, or 2 cores running at 4.3ghz, or most of the time with 3 or 4 cores running at 4.2ghz.

EDIT: This allows Intel to sell you a faster CPU with the same cooler and motherboard power delivery circuitry as a slower one would need if it always ran all of the cores at the same speed.

With that setup you can easily clock too 4.4 with under 1.3v with the proper cooling. Can typical OC to 4.0 by just setting the multiplier, maybe LLC to 3 and input voltage to 1.8 (may not even be needed just for 4.0).

What settings did you change to try to get 4.0?

i tried with default OC settings that come with Taichi and at 4.0 windows just started crashing and freezing, so now i tried Intel Extreme utility and with that i am able to reach 4.0 but what is the matter with bios? and i think my power is set to really by default

Yeah any kind of auto OC can be problematic. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone actually recommend doing that vs manually OC'ing. For a quick OC to 4.41, you can manually set the multiplier (all core) to 41, then set the "input voltage" to 1.8 and set the CPU core voltage to 1.18v. I'd probably set LLC to level 2 also. Then load Windows and start stress testing with prime 95 (just use blend test). All that said, what kind of cooler are you using? Watch your temps even when only going to 4.1 if your using air.

I am using hyperx 212 coolermaster. Are you sure setting these wont cause any damage? Coz 1.8 sounds high

1.8 is for the input voltage, not your core voltage. You can comfortably go as high as 1.95 (depending who you ask) for input voltage. 1.18 for your core voltage. Not sure on the cooler until you actually implement the OC, kick off prime 95 torture tests and watch the temps (install "core temp" to monitor temps). If you're staying below 75c during prime 95 testing you're fine.

Ok i will try that, but what do you suggest about intel extreme utility? I used that and reached 4.0 but the temps were 80 after few mins.
