Hi guys, I need some advice.

I've been gifted a PC with an i7 6950X with an X99 motherboard and i'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with this cpu and what its capabilities are? Is it worth keeping? Shall I invest in a new computer? Mine recently died and my friend had this spare lying around.

Any tips on building on this set up, or what I should do with it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

It is a 10 core, 3Ghz base, 140W CPU with a quad channel memory controller. It has 40 PCIe lanes. It is a beefy CPU if you do rendering or other heavily threaded processing. It won't be as fast as a higher clocked newer i7 for gaming.

Tips: Get a big cooler. Get a big power supply. Get a big case. You are going to need them...

I've got a large case, a 750w power supply and a corsair H100i spare. What intel chipset + CPU would you recommend for gaming? I had a 3770k that I absolutely loved but the mobo went and it's very hard to replace! thus the reason for the generous donation!

That is one beast cpu. Loads of grit (10 cores) and stinkin' fast for games as well. There are faster cpus sure but for free ? Nothing can touch it.

What mainboard ? That chipset is the best of its generation especially when paired with a good board/ uefi. I use the x99 from ASUS.

Specifically it got the PCIe 3x4 M.2 port.

So what you want is a 970 PRO + couple a fast movers ( ssd s) + 32 GB DDR 2400

and you are there.

I've got a Gigabyte GA-X99-SLI motherboard, which was also gifted to me. Any idea what kind of set up would be good to work towards with that?
