Hey ,
so im interested in buying an EGPU to use a GPU that i may use in a future build , any ideas on what i could get without having too much bottleneck ?
current laptop has an i7 7500u w/ 8gb ram , everything else is stock

thanks in advance

Right now, I would say nothing, nothing is an ideal GPU at current prices. Add an eGPU dock to that price and you are looking at $700 just to get into a mid-range GTX1060.

Sell what you have and buy a laptop with a GTX1070 or something in it. Or check back in 6+ months and see how prices are.

My country didn't get affected at all by this , for example a 1050 ti stormX 4gb variant goes for 170 usd new from the right places and 1060 3gb for 320 , 6gb 350 usd. Was thinking to get the 1050 ti , what do you think ?

I would still say the costs aren't in your favor for doing something like this. eGPU docks are usually a few hundred dollars on their own. When you spend more on supporting hardware than the card is worth it just doesn't make sense. Unless you are going with one of those cheap ones.

I would treat it as an interesting experiment but given the cost I would just pick up the appropriate light gaming laptop and then buy a discrete GPU later for the desktop. Assuming that would even be necessary at that point.

You can get an entire 1050Ti laptop for around $800 US, probably a bit more with an i7 and an SSD. What did you spend on the laptop you have now?

The other issue is how are you planning to connect the eGPU dock to your laptop? If you have a Thunderbolt 3 port on your laptop, you can connect the dock. If you don't have Thunderbolt 3 port, then an eGPU is much more difficult to connect.

In Malta the pricing of a 1050 ti laptop is around 1800 usd with just a 7300hq and no SSD at all. This happens just because people tend to be scared from building their stuff so they just buy things ready. Without mentioning the amount of ignorance in the subject. So projects like these are an absolute breeze price wise.

On the subject of the dock , yes i am doing a custom dock that would only cost about 120 usd to have it near perfect , with everything included.

Thanks for your interest , regards Lyon

Speaking of ignorance, you're still leaving us ignorant of how exactly you plan on interfacing the GPU with the laptop, whether you're using the mini-PCIE or Thunderbolt. This is crucial information to answer your question.

Oh my god ... The irony. Im using mini PCIE , will route it to the Dvd drive since i dont use it and will act like an official port without cutting the bottom piece which costs quite a bit and harder to use.

You appear deadset on doing this, but I do urge you to keep your expectations realistic. It won't perform as well as a laptop with an actual 1050ti (or whatever GPU you choose) as there will simply be a lot of times it runs into bandwidth issue. While x8 vs. x16 doesn't generally cause a large performance hit, x1 absolutely can.

sadly i am aware of this issue and is the only thing holding me back from doing this since i don`t know how much performance i will lose :/
