Hey guys, i'm currently running the aurora r6 i7-7700 CPU @ 3.60GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070, doing a lot of YouTube & streaming. I wanted to increase performance, im already overclocking my gpu pretty heavy. i was wondering if it would be worth getting the i7 7700k instead for overclocking, if overclocking would be relatively safe, and if the i7 7700k is compatible? i know the 8700k actually isnt compatible with the.. chip.. in my... motherboard? idk. dell representative gave me that info. thanks guys

Solution
The i7 7700k is compatible, but will make NO difference.
Even if you manage to overclock it (precarious procedure), you won't gain as much as you would with another, more powerful processor.
Also consider that your CPU is already better than the majority of chips out there.

Solution
i7-7700 3.6-4.2Ghz
i7-7700k 4.2-4.5Ghz

Since you mention the computer is a Dell we can reasonably assume you don't have a Z class board, or VRMs designed for overclocking.

The only gain you would get would be the 300Mhz faster maximum boost.

If you want a little more performance I suggest an after market CPU cooler and to run the computer in maximum performance mode. I believe Dell does let you set the CPU to run maximum boost all the time as well.

You have a decent high end gaming setup as is really. Coffeelake is not significantly faster than Kabylake for gaming. Streaming it is a little better because of the extra cores.

thank you for your response! i believe i am already running maximum performance on what ive got here.. so you suggest just increasing cooling? anything else for substantial upgrades? maybe a better graphics card?

do you have a recommendation? go through the full swap to an 8700k maybe?

For streaming, I would suggest either the 8700k (same socket), or a RYZEN 7.

I think the OP covered this, it is the same socket, but not compatible. That would require a new motherboard.
