I want to upgrade my PC for the new year. I am planning on upgrading my GPU to a 1080 or 1070 ti (whichever I can find for a decent price) and I was recommended to purchase a i7-7700k to better fit the new GPU and have no bottleneck. My question is about the compatibility of all my parts. My current system has:
CPU: i5 4690K
GPU: GTX 970
Mobo: Asus Z97-K
RAM: 2x 4GB DDR3
PSU: not sure but 700w 80plus

1) It will take me some time in order to get all the parts, so will the bottleneck of a 1080 or 1070 ti with a i5 4690k be too much?
2) Is the i7 7700k even compatible with my current system + the new GPU?
3) Any recommendations for parts that would be better to have/more compatible that are relatively inexpensive (up to your own judgement for the definition of inexpensive)?

THANKS

The i7-7700K is not compatible with your system. You would need a new Z270 motherboard and DDR4 RAM. I would not recommend the i7-7700K because it is very similar to an i7-4790K, which IS compatible with your system.

If you were to switch to a whole new mobo/ram, I would recommend an i5-8600K or i7-8700K; or even an i5-8400 which performs almost the same as an i7-7700K.

You can overclock your i5-4690K to 4.5GHz and do okay in most games. But you will see some drops in GPU usage and framerate in some CPU demanding games.

So, I would say see how your i5 performs, and if you don't like it get an i7-4790K (used on ebay is fine if it's a reputable seller) OR save for a whole new 8th-gen Intel system. You might want more than 8GB of RAM to fully max out performance.
