[SOLVED] i7 7700k not using all it's cores?

Hello everyone.

So I recently upgraded my motherboard and cpu, and I now have a ASUS Prime B250 Pro motherboard and an i7 7700k cpu.

I happened to stumble upon the "performance" tab in the task manager, and when I took a look at my CPU there it told me that I only had 3 cores and 6 logical processors. I found this wierd, since I know that my CPU is a quad-core one.

Decided to download CPU-Z and it tells me the same thing; 3 cores. I also tried going into msconfig to change the amount of processors my pc should boot up with, and I could only choose 6 as maximum.

The device manager on the other hand, displayed 8 duplicates (or whatever you call it) for the i7 7700k.

Last but not least, I went into the BIOS to see if I could find anything particular there and I found the "active cpu cores" or whatever it's called. It was set to "all" and could be changed between "All", "1", "2" or "3".

Does this mean that 1 core is broken? It feels like something's wrong here, and I appreciate all the help i can get. The CPU is 2 days old. Thanks in advance!

Did you format your pc after the replace ? if not i suggest you to do it..

Did you upgrade your BIOS to fully support your chip?

And also, did you just upgrade the MB and CPU and run the same windows? Sometimes Windows needs to be reinstalled so it knows whats going on with the new hardware.

Lastly, what version of Windows? Kaby Lake (7xxx) series CPU's don't support Windows 7.

Grab the latest BIOS just in case as well. Really a B250 board shouldn't be playing host to an i7-7700k, so maybe they missed something.

If not, you'll probably want a replacement anyway, that is just plain odd.

Personally I would RMA the CPU and grab yourself even an entry level Z270 board.

You acquired a top-of-the-line cpu, but cheaped out on the mobo (an OCable cpu w/ a mobo that can't make use of that feature).
I hope you at least bought a decent aftermarket cooler, or the heat will cause problems as the 7700k runs quite hot even at stock clocks.

First of all, thanks to all of you for helping me out so quickly! Im about to try out all the things you have told me, and I realize now that i maybe should have gone for a better mobo but that's kind of too late now! The computer works fine overall, a big upgrade from my last one so maybe I should be satisfied with the way it is atm! :)

No I did not, my motherboard came with the lastest version of BIOS :)

Yeah seems like I'll have to reinstall windows, kind of sad but I guess i can't help it. I currenty have windows 10 pro!

Seems like that's what I'll have to do! Currently rendering an animation as a school assignment so I will do it ASAP :) Yes, I had a AMD Phenom II X6 1100T!
