i7 7700k overheating

hi guys i have a new build about 1 month old. i just got a new i7 7700k replacing an i3 6100. i have a problem with it over heating when i first turn on the pc it gets to 80c then it goes back down to about 35c idle. while gaming for 5 minutes it can get over 80c im using the stock cooler that came with the i3 could this be my problem ? i have had the heatsink off about 10 times making sure the thermal paste is the right amount and that the cooler is properly compressed against the cpu every thing seems fine to me my i3 was fine. so anyway anyone got any ideas ? also i should mention when i touch the heatsink after an 80c reading its only warm to the touch. maybe my temps lie to me ?

The stock cooler for the i3 is not rated for 91w CPUs, which is why the 7700K doesn't ship with one. Intel doesn't consider it to be adequate.

That said, 80c is not overheating. Your CPU will not throttle until 100c. It's probably not a great idea to let it get up to throttling temperatures over long periods of time, but chances are good it will still long out-live its usefulness.

Btw did you mean 6700K or 7700K?

yes the 7700k 4.2 ghz. so if i get a better cooler it should be much cooler right? thanks for your help

Yes. On the cheap, the Cryorig M9i (~$25) is a good, inexpensive cooler for it. You might spend a bit more on a Cryorig H7 (~$35) if you intend to lightly overclock (and have a "Z" chipset), and if you want to heavily overclock it, a Cryrig H5 ultimate or Noctua NH-D14 or D15 ($80-90) would be the best choice.

Hey there,

I wouldn't use a stock cooler for a weaker CPU (in your case the i3) for cooling a high-performance CPU.
Even if it may not be overheating strictly speaking, I would strongly suggest getting a better cooler - you can get a decent cooler for a few bucks these days; there is no need to stress your CPU with a weak cooler.
BTW nice build you got ;-)
Another 8 gigs of RAM might suit it well IMO

alright thanks a lot ill spend up to 100 for a cooler at least its not a bad cpu i thought i was going to have to get my mony back

Be aware that a $100 cooler will only perform very slightly better than a $35 one. It's diminishing returns. You may not even get 100mhz more overclock.

i would look out for BIOS updates too. i think there is some talk going around that kaby lake CPUs run hotter when paired with a Z170 mobo. still though, you need to get a better cooler

with the i3 at max load i was getting 65c with the stock cooler i didnt think the i7 would get that much hotter seems i was wrong lol its my first build so i am very new at this. i will get another 8gigs ram soon thanks for the reply

i do have the latest bois but i will keep an eye out for new versions

check your bios your bios should be update if you want to run well at a regular temperature of a processor .i also got the same specs that you got but only difference is that i got gigabyte g270 x gaming k5 ....the latest update of bios give the voltage stability to all cores of processor so through then processor can performed well after its updation....

i do have the lasest bios still getting temps of 100c using prime 95. temp are high all round

The Intel core i7 7700K can be overheated, Yes. When Overclock to 5GHz and stress Cpu, test it can be up to 90c or 100c as well.The Intel Z270 chipset supporting Kaby Lake, you can use the Skylake instead.Or you can use the Z170a one or X99 one.
Note: I haven't build the 7th Gen intel one. Future i will have it.
