i7 7700K Temps jumping up and down !

Hey guys

So I just finished building my friend's PC

ASUS Z270 ROG Maximus IX Formula
i7 7700K
NZXT Kraken x62

tried the pc and the CPU temperatures were jumping from 30c to 55c for just opening the browser for example or any other app !

talked to Intel and amazon about it .. and managed to get a new one and used new thermal paste and guess what ! the temps were jumping like a ..... !!

if you didn't understand the issue .. I have a video I could upload .

I'm thinking if a faulty Motherboard " I hope not " but my friend brought to my attention that it might be the coolers problem ? I don't know what to do ? are those temps normal ?

To me it sounds like a heatsink pressure issue.

Nope. Looks just like normal transient temp responses for an intel cpu. Intel has temp strips directly in the cores, and they get checked a couple times a second. Any change in load whatsoever will create heat, instantly, which the strips pick up on, only it takes a few seconds for that instant heat to transfer through the lid, paste and be absorbed by the cooler and finally dissipated. Jumps from 35-55°C with even a 15% change in loads is very normal behavior for Intel cpu's, but if you notice, the temps then drop a few seconds later as they finally reach the cpu cooler, which finally gets to do its job. If you were seeing sustained 55°C with just a 15% load, then you might have a small issue with cooling, probably from insufficient airflow patterns, but otherwise your cpu seems to be behaving normally.

Understand too that aios like the x62 can take upto 1/2 hr for the liquid inside to acclimatize to loads, (I have an x61) so temporary spikes are quite normal. It's only under long, gaming loads that the true benefits of the aios capacity become obvious, your liquid temp will go from @33°C to lower 40's and thats about it.

That CPU has thermal issues when running at high clocks, and opening software usually spikes the frequency briefly. Frankly, if your spikes are within the levels considered safe, I wouldn't sweat it.

It is normal. A cpu switching from idle to load even for a short time generates heat. The heat can only transfer so fast. The thermal paste between some Intel cpus and head spreaders is not helping, but you are well within specs.

Here is a 2600K doing the same(also note the lowest and highest package power from idle to load. You should see if I game).

The cpu speed is only 4.4ghz HWinfo lies 😛

Only part that worries me is the unexpected close error[did you close it at some point? I never use that software], not the temps.

Kicking around Tom's Hardware got me even higher peaks

It is just the sudden change from 12 watts to 88 in my case.

If you want to test something run a game or something and check the peaks. Please note some instructions like AVX/AVX2 will result in VERY high temperatures(that nothing else will match).

That's why for solid, reliable temp testing p95 version 26.6 is recommended, not anything newer. Using small fft gives a 100% load, unlike Aida64 or OCCT which can and do drop cpu loads to as low as 80% when mixing ram amounts. Linpack is hard on this, only allowing cpu to 90% loads I believe. Newer versions of p95 use unrealistic amounts of AVX/AVX2 among others, which are not used in games very much at all, and only in certain applications, mostly professional usage.
