Howdy!

I have an i7 7700k running on msi z170 gaming pro carbon.
would it affect the CPU in any way? Plus I'm currently trying to get my hands on a 3060ti, would it run fine on a 144hz monitor? or would there be a bottleneck.

Lean to overclock, the 7700k while having fewer cores still has speed going for it.
There won't be a bottleneck could you gain more performance with more cores and a newer generation of cpu well yeah of course.

Push the 7700k to 4.7-5.0Ghz and you should be fine. A decent match for the gpu, regardless of 1080P or 1440P

What 144 hz monitor? 1080p? 1440p? 4k? Ultrawide?
What games are you trying to play?

144Hz 1080P yes.

Alright, thank you!

What games are you trying/wanting to play.??
Some games are limited by the cpu or gpu.
There will always be a bottleneck it just depends on the game. A 4 core cpu will struggle on some more demanding games.
A cpu is used to pre render the frames for the gpu. If the cpu can pre render more frames than the gpu can process you will have a gpu bottleneck! It works vice versa also.

At 1080p 144hz I would imagine your cpu would struggle to push 144fps to your gpu consistently based on newer games. That is if you play the newest AAA titles

Moving to a 10th or 11th gen Intel cpu like the 11600k would provide a big gaming boost over the 7700k especially at the 1% low frame rate. If you want to move over to AMD the 5600x is an outstanding gaming cpu.

Moving to 10th or 11th gen from 7th gen would require moving to a new platform, which the OP may not be able to do right now.
