Hi, fellow forum users. So, I have a conundrum. I have a friend who is just getting in to custom pc's and is trying to build a decent gaming pc on a semi-flexible budget. He doesn't have a lot of money, so he's currently deciding between an i7-860 build, using a $20 i7 on the local craigslist, or a ryzen 3 build when it comes out in (probably) august. So, I know what I think, but I wanted to know what the rest of you think: should he go ryzen or i7?

lets see, a 100 year old intel or a ryzen?

i would choose the ryzen, i can jump form ryzen 3 to ryzen 8 whenever i want, the i7 is the end of the line, and will force a full system change including ram, cpu and mainboard if required more cpu power

old intel cpus are great if cheap and not planned to be upgraded, but if you are comparing it to a ryzen, they look bad, very bad

I'm aware that the i7 is at the very end of it's life, and the ryzen would beat the snot out of it, but the i7 is $20, and a motherboard can be had on ebay (time and ebay makes everything cheap) for $25-35. He once again doesn't have a lot of money, though he could stretch to hit the ryzen. He doesn't have a job yet, and I was wondering if it would be better for him to get a decent older computer now, and then in 2-3 years when he has some free cash he could build a real screamer of a computer. Oh yes, he also has a another lga1156 computer that has some transferable parts. Once again, I'd love to hear back from you (or anyone else).

The i7 860 is nearing the end of its useful life, I wouldn't be all that confident in getting another 2-3 years out of it, especially if your friend is into the latest AAA games. The i7 also has zero upgrade path on it and is on a really outdated platform eg. no native SATA 6Gbps or USB 3.0 support. About the only good thing about it is it would be cheap and it would still perform okay if he's only really interested in playing more undemanding titles like CS:GO, League of Legends or Dota 2.

Ok, so it seems like you guys recommend going for the ryzen 3 regardless of the price. Thanks for the input, I'll definitely try and recommend it.

if you are on a budget, and since we still don't know how much r3 will cost, perhaps a used but more recent 4th gen i5 could be found at decent prices

otherwise, i wouldn't bother buying the old i7, even if i is cheap, old mainboards are a pita and are, old, no idea how they will behave in the future, if they will reach a future and old ddr3 1333mhz, is slow

i would get with ryzen they are brand new , supports ddr4 , room for future imrovement and better with controlling gpus.
