It says the chipset supports up to DDR4 2666.

Must I have matching RAM for this processor if I buy an ASUS ROG STRIX Z390 Gaming E?

What happens if I upgrade to 3000mhz? Would it clock higher or it doesn't matter?

I have no interest in overclocking it. If I would get 2400mhz slow the system down? I just want the best speed available for PC Gaming.

Advice?

You can run 3000MHz DDR4 with that chipset. If you enable the XMP profile in the BIOS it will run at 3000MHz speed, if not it will default to 2133MHz.

You can run 2400MHz RAM if you want, really with the 8700 on a Z370 board the only time you're going to potentially run into RAM compatibility problems is if you by really high speed DDR4, eg. 4000MHz or higher, at that point the quality of the CPU's memory controller can become a limiting factor on whether you get the full speed or not.

Well, I am using a Z390 board but thanks for the input. I got a 3000mhz ram 16gb. Thanks.
