i7-8700k 5GHz OC?

So I'm experimenting with my new 8700k to get it up to 5GHz. I'm a beginner at OC, so I set now 5GHz @ 1,31V. I use AIDA64 for testing. The test looks fine for 30 seconds: 5GHz, 110-120W, 80 degrees Celsius. But then it gets limited to the TDP of 95W. Is this normal?

EDIT: read the temperature wrong, it got to max 80 degrees Celsius, before it turned down from 120W to 95W

No, that's too hot. What cooler are you using? Try lowering the voltage. What temp did it go up to when stress testing at stock speed?

Sounds like it's throttling a bit if AIDA is lowering TDP. Do you need 1.35v? Without delidding, these CPUs get hot around this speed and voltage.

Well I tried AIDA64 and Prime95, both of them turned it up to 120W and then after 30-45 seconds down to 95W. I'm not experimenting with lower voltage, but every voltage monitor shows a different result. Core Temp says 1,374V @5GHz, CPU-Z and the monitor of AIDA64 are different.

Voltages and temps look fine. The 1.31v set in UEFI is the one to trust. VID is what CPU is requesting. What about software recording clock speed during tests to be sure you stay at 5Ghz. If so, i'd disregard the TDP listing.

assuming you applied the thermal paste properly, you might consider upgrading your cooler to a better quality one - i went to that cooler's website and it's heavy on "snake oil" description & self grandising, but not a lot of substance. They actually claim on the specs page it's rated for up to 300W, which is a little bit of a stretch

here's a review comparison - it's 5.5C degrees warmer than a Cryorig H7 at idle and 6.5 C degrees warmer under load

don't know why, but the Noctua coolers are not included - if your budget can handle it, that's what i'd go with

if your case can handle a 165mm tall cooler, here's one i'd suggest Noctua NH-D15 https://noctua.at/en/products/cpu-cooler-retail/nh-d15/specification

and a close second choice, if you need a 160mm tall cooler Noctua NH-D15S https://noctua.at/en/products/cpu-cooler-retail/nh-d15s/specification

if you compare just the weight of that cooler of yours to the Noctua 15s, the Artic is 680 grams while the Noctua is 980 g,
considerably more mass in the way of aluminum & copper to transfer that heat up and away from the IHS

If the Noctua is out of your budget, go with the Cryorig H7 - just make sure to check it's height with what your computer case mfgr shows it will accept

You can find my photos of it on my rig on hardforum... All the hate on this forum for suggesting a delid has turned me off from even helping you people. Especially since it has been proven that a delid fixes the heat issues with these cpus.

I think not.

A delid is OK, if that is the actual solution to a problem, when you've exhausted everything else.. However, it is not the first thing you jump to.

I can't buy anything new for my rig right now, but I think the cooler should be enough. In the first 30 where I get constant 5GHz at 1,31-1,32V it gets to 75, max 80 degrees

What's VID? Do I have to set that for overclock too?

It really sounds like your temps, maybe try a lower clock speed & voltage (4.6@1.25v perhaps) & see if you get the same power reduction.

Your cooler is almost certainly too small for a heavily overclocked 8700k, they really pump out the heat!
