I7 8700k and Noctua NH-D15

So I am soon getting an RTX 2080 TI and I have seen alot of benchmarks with there 2 components and I d like to OC my cpu, was wondering hwo high i can overclock it with the Noctua NH-D15 since I already have the cooler. I saw a thread abot this and the guy in it said that Intel s thermal paste inside the processor is trah and I d be better off buying liquid cooling but the cooler wasn t cheap and i d love to hear oppinions. Changing from the d15 to non clc won't change anything. So stick with it.

Also while delidding will drop the temps drastically regardless of the cooling solution but will void your warranty and you risk damaging the cpu. The risk is minimal if you use something like "delid die mate".

Try first how far you can oc without Delidding and see if it's enough.

Yeah so that kinda was the question...how much can I oc withouth delidding...and by "trying it"...i am a litteral potato when it comes to overclocking so yeah....never done this before : D. I mean even if i oc it to like let s say 4.7 GHz cuz that s how i want to rock it and i get stable temps and voltages how do i knwo when it con t go higher? Like temps over 90? My ideal clock speed would be 4.7 GHz on each core and I think that is doable with this fan but i don t know qith what temps, i mean my ideal would be 80 underload, but again i don t know if that s possible since i have 0 experience with overclocking...

Doesn't seem like overclocking is the right thing for you.
If you're not careful and apply too aggressive overclock (by error, when'not knowing, what you're doing), you can damage your hardware.
And $400 cpu is not the right one for learning, how to overclock.

I run a cryorig R1 ultimate on my 8700k. Ive ran it up to 5.2Ghz prime and benchmark stable, but leave it stock since its a waste to OC with a GTX 980sc.

It really comes down to a few things, how much money are you willing to spend if you break something, how big your coconut's are to push for higher speeds, and how lucky your are on silicon lottery for voltage and temps.

I am not thinking about any crazy oc but i want arounx 4.7 GHz and rn I don t think that i can afford a new cpu ...mobo maybe, cooler i guess but i will have wasted 100$, and from what i ve read almost any cpu like this can get atleast 500 hz higher than stock , in this case being about 4700-4800. I just don t think that the extra 3 or 5 frames from that point are worth the risk.

I've been gaming with a Noctua NH-D15 on a non-delid'd 8700K with 4.7 GHz on all cores for almost a year. At 1.210V it only exceeds 70C during bench marking. Gaming is typically 60C to 69C depending on the game.

Mileage may vary of course.

I may delid it and increase the overclock in a couple of years if I see a need to.
