Getting ridiculous temps.

My system:

i7-920 (stock heatsink & speed)
corsair 6gb ram (default speed)
msi x58 pro-e
corsair 650w psu
6600gt
80gb sata
1tb sata
Antec 900 case

At idle with nothing running the temps range from 82°-86°. If I open a web browser it goes to 90°-92°. If I start playing a video 2-3 of the cores easily hit 100°. I get stock heatsinks are not the best, but I don't think I should be having these kind of temps. I've tried pushing down on the heatsink and that lowers things by a degree or two. Looking around the internet seems most people are around 30°-40° for idle and 70° for load. Should I be contacting intel on this and trying to have it RMA'd?

Did you wipe off that goo on the HSF before you installed it?

Did you take the plastic tray off the bottom of the HSF before you installed it?

Are all the pins secure?

I take it the fan is spinning while you're pushing it down harder and it is plugged in to the CPU fan header?

I know these sound like silly questions, but this stuff does happen from time to time.

Why is it the first words out of everyones mouth is RMA? "I got a bad part." 99% of the issues discussed here are because people are not following the instructions and installed it incorrectly. At least read some of the articles before posting.

If your CPU idles above 40C - Stop! - you did something wrong...

What do you think they do with those perfectly good parts you return? They run them through the line, retest, repackage them and send them out again as refurbished.

Almost always you are getting someone else's RMA'ed part...think about that...there are way too many people who cannot understand a bios setup who return memory, CPU's, motherboards, drives, speakers, mice and so on. You have no idea how badly they overheated or overvolted their part. Sure it passes the line just fine, but how much life have you lost?
