There's a big chance that my motherboard just bit the dust on my main desktop computer and I'll need to replace it. For the most part, I know how to do that, but there's only one problem. I have an i7 920 2.67GHz processor, which only supports a few select motherboards from what I gather. Since I don't know much about CPU sockets, can anyone help me find an ATX motherboard that will fit my cpu? I need it to support at least 12GBs of DDR3 ram... Thanks

Solution
Any 1366 socket mobo will fit your cpu.But such mobos are rare and expensive, except some oem mobo's on ebay though i dont know about their quality or their cpu compability.

ebay

will the MSI X58M LGA 1366 Intel X58 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard work? It's pretty "cheap"

Wait... I didn't notice that it's a micro ITX. I need the regular size. Would it just be cheaper to buy a whole new cpu and motherboard?

Yes but its worth only if you get anything like a core i5 or higher.

I'm on a huge budget, but I still want something that will last and can play some games. What about an AMD core like the FX 6300? it has 6 cores and its only 100$

Whatever gets my computer running again for as cheap as possible is my budget, LOL. Well, I have an r9 380 which I never got to use because my motherboard died, a WD caviar blue 1tb HDD, 8GBs DDR3 ram, windows 7 home premium.

I've heard that amd cores overheat a lot more than intel, but I'm seriously running out of options. How much would an aftermarket cooler cost to keep it from turning into a toaster while playing demanding games?

The fx 6300 on stock clocks and voltages would not overheat even with the stock cooler, but in order to keep up with demanding games needs overclock which overclock wants good psu, mobo and cooler and also is not fairly cheap.

My advice is to check the ebay link that i sent you,for an oem mobo if its cheap and consider a whole upgrade in the future.

it has 3.5 GHz by default, though? Isn't that more than enough paired with my r9 380 for games lie battlefield 4? I also have a 650W power supply already.

Yeah, I checked your link and found some pretty cheap motherboards that might work. The only problem is that I would like to "future proof" my PC by buying new parts, if it's worth it.

Then grab a core i5 4460-4430 whatever is cheaper and a cheap h81 mobo at about 200-230 $ pretty much the same like an a fx 6300 with a good mobo and an air cooler, but with much better perfomance strong enough for every game.

Sorry about the late response. I thought I'd have my computer back from the shop by now to make a decision. Are there any duel channel ddr3 motherboards for around that price that are regular ATX? I have an ATX case, not MATX....
