I7 920 mugen 2 scythe HOT!

So this was my first build in close to 4 years. i7 920, asus p6t, ati 5850, corsair 6gb, and such and such. I went with the mugen 2 scythe cooler, figuring it would be good enough for the overclocks I had in mind. Well, factor in the human factor, and BAM I have an issue.

I have an 3.6ghz overclock and its friggin hot. 43*c idle! 85*c prime95! yeaaah. It actually runs pretty much the same temps with a 3.8ghz overclock.

From what I have gathered in my research, these are abnormally high for this combo. So that pretty much tells me that there is one glaring issue here-me.

I am open for any ideas. I used arctic silver 5 per the instructions on their website. I may have put a bit too much (the proper recommended length of bead, just too thick of a bead). Would that cause this much of a temp issue? Perhaps could it be my overclock (183hz @ 1.275v)?

Any other suggestions or criticism (constructive or otherwise) is more than welcome. I know I am a relative noob at this. Im just looking for any help at all. Thanks in advance.

I would back it of a bit until you have some more reasonable temps and is that a core reading or cpu reading are you looking at real temp then your seeing core temps. Anyway if it was just installed then give that thermal some time to cure it may be that you need to reseat the heatsink and start over with a "very" thin layer of thermal paste or you may have a cpu that runs hot ! is it a D0 stepper or ? your voltage will definetly effect temps but if your not stabel under that voltage then dont bother ultimatly you do have a slight overheat under load so back it off a bit and go with a lighter oc or reseat the heatsink and try again is that a small thread run on prime ? so many factors could be at play here1 whats airflow like? whats ambient temps in room? your idol temps seem close to what i would expect with this configuration and a 3.8 but your load temps is going to far !

Thanks for your input. I fourtunately fixed my issue however. I took my comp apart and reseated the mugen applying a much smaller amount of paste. This helps a small bit (2-3 degrees c). However the main issue was my voltage. I had done the "research" and tried to duplicate an overclock that was done on an 920 with C0 stepping. Come to realize mine has D0 stepping, so yeah less voltage was needed. I have it deadnuts stable at 3.8ghz with 1.24v and temps dont go above 62 degrees c even after hours of prime95.

I have the same problem, only my OC is 191x21=4011Mhz at 1.25v, and my max temps are 76/75/71/72. Is this too hot for a Scythe Mugen 2?

i7-9xx is well known for generating heat and so those temperatures are actually very good IMO.

HT OFF, those temps are prob to high for that cooler, and HT ON i'd say that those are about right...
