[SOLVED] i7 920 upgraded by Ryzen 3600

Hello all.

Here is my thing. I upgraded my 11 year old i7 920 with a Risen 3600. I figured that it would be a significant speed boost but .... as far I see now, it isn't.

I am not an harcore gamer but if I play, for example world of tanks, then I see no difference at all in fps. Yes, the game does seem to run a tiny bit smoother but not in a way that it would justify the 500 bucks spend on a new computer.

Old specs : i7 920 with 12 gig ddr 3 and a gtx 960 running on a x58 chipset
New specs : Ryzen 3600 with 16 gig ddr 4 and the same gtx 960 running on a x570 chipset

I was kinda hoping for a good bang for my bucks but right now I am regretting I have spend so much money. Is my old i7 still so superior or ?

Any ideas or advice? Thank you in advance

Obviously GTX 960 is limiting performance. Upgrade that one too.

Firstly the limiting factor is the gtx960. While a decent pairing with the i7 920 it is not strong enough to utilise the extra performance from the 3600.

Also did you reinstall Windows, if no you also want to do this.

Finally is your RAM 2x8gb and what speed is it? Ryzen really wants 3000-3600mhz.

Thank you for the quick replies. The ram speed is 3000mhz. So that would be good.

On behalf of the fresh windows install, I didn’t. Simply placed the new hardware and windows did the rest, so it said on the screen, I did however install the new drivers for the new x570. Is that not enough or should I gain more performance when doing a fresh install.

And if I upgrade the gtx960 ... what would be a good upgrade considering I play games but not hardcore or 4k

I wasn’t prepared for this setback so I haven’t thought about that. Without being a hardcore gamer I do want that everything runs smooth whenever I do play a game. So anything that would give me that should be worth the money.

What resolution are you using?
Have you used GForce Experience to optimise the settings?

World of Tanks is a great game. It has a huge playerbase in regions where hardware is relatively expensive. As such they try [and pull off] to make make the game playable and visual with low spec hardware.

I get around 90 FPS [it bounces between 85-100] using a i7-4770K and GTA1070 at 3440x1440 on a 100Hrz monitor.

Get a 1660 Ti

World of Tanks is indeed a great game, love it to bits. With my new specs I am getting around 60/80 fps. Playing in 2560x1080 high settings. Haven’t used GForce Exp so I should give that a try.

It's likely your GPU is holding you back, but do see what the optimised setting do for you. It may give you a bump

I went from an FX 8350 (about the same as your CPU), to a 3600, and some games I didn't see an improvement at all like Project Cars 2, but games like BeamNG drive where it's very CPU demanding I doubled my FPS. I have a 980 Ti though so that would stress the CPU more than a 960, if anything you'd be limited by only having 2GB of VRAM. I'd recommend an RTX 2060 or a RX 5700 when the aftermarket coolers come out. Or be like me and find a used 980 Ti/1070/Vega 56 & 64.

I did a clean windows install and that helped. Doing max 80 fps in wot with max settings on sd. Not bad and better then it was. Happy for now and looking to buy a replacement for my 960

You are right. Tried more cpu demanding games and that is a significant improvement. As videocard I been looking to get either the gtx1660 or perhaps a used vega 56. 2nd hand they are bot so expansive. Tho I rather get myself a new one, just feels better.

New is best if you can do it, I just found the 980 Ti for $250CAD, ($190USD) and it was the EVGA Classified model.
