[SOLVED] I7 920 Vs E3 1220 v1

Good morning all,

I had a look in my garage over the weekend and came across two of my old builds one i7 920 that's water cooled, from memory it was overclocked at 4.25 ghz comfortably and a E3 1220 version 1 that you cannot over clock. I've also been given a RX 470 Nitro. When looking at various CPU comparison web pages the E3 1220 v1 comes up better than the I7 920. Components for the I7 920 setup are considerably better than of the E3 1220 v1 but my question is if my I7 920 is overcloked from 2.66 ghz to 4.25 ghz what would the comparison between the two CPU's be? I7 920 at standard shows a large bottle neck when running with a RX 470 but the E3 1220 v1 doesn't.
Any thoughts are much appreciated.

I would take the 920 over the xeon.

920 is a 4 core 8 thread, triple channel, faster ram speeds, and overclocked.

1220 is a 4 core 4 thread, dual channel, not overclocked.

I moved from a i7 950 @ 4.7GHz to a xeon x5690, the 5690 could only get to 4.0GHz and ram was locked at 1333Mhz. This was the same ram on my 950 that could OC over 2000MHz. I then swapped the x5690 to a 980x that ran @ 4.2GHz with 1866Mhz ram for the past 2 years.

Just a month ago i finely put her out to the pasture with the last config being:
i7 980x @4.2GHz
Asus rampage 3 extreme
Mushkin blackline 6x2GB 1600Mhz CL6 @ 1866MHz CL8
3 EVGA 780 Ti classified
EVGA G2 1600w

Was replaced by a Ryzen 3600x at stock and performs just as well as my 8700K @ 5.1Ghz

Looks like at stock the E3 1220 v1 has a much less of a bottleneck. Do you think that the I7 920 once OC to 4.25 ghz would then have the edge?

I know it's off topic a bit but my x58 I7 960 is still purring away. It's retired from gaming and just replaced the PSU hoping it doesn't die in the near future. It was a monster gaming pc for so long. It's the only pc I'm kinda attached too for some reason.

Know what you mean, i gamed on mine for years, then took it to work as an office computer. Just replacing it last month.

Okay so to summarise, although the E3 1220 v1 is more powerful than a I7 920 at stock, is the i7 920 more powerful than the E3 1220 v1 when OCed to 4.25 ghz?

but the benchmark tests are only done by stock cpus. You've taken a 2.66Ghz cpu up to 4.2Ghz while the e3 1220 is still stock.

If you have both CPU's throw the e3 1220 into the board and bench mark it. Then put the 920 in at stock and benchmark it, then finally overclock the 920 and see if its better then the e3 1220. Then you will know for sure which cpu is the best to have in the system

Correct, benchmarks are at stock that's why I was asking if anyone knows if the I7 920 OC would then be more powerful? I could of course benchmark all scenarios but was wondering if anyone knew the answer before having to benchmark them all?

I would agree with this assessment in terms of single thread performance. The x5690 is basically a faster clocked i7-920 (ignore the extra 2 cores) and at only 3.5Ghz is faster than the e3-1220. At 4.25Ghz, you would be possibly be even exceeding the stock speeds of a i7-2600k.
