The FX 6300 would be a better choice out of the two. If you were upgrading then i might have suggested an i5 or i7 4th Gen in Intel or the FX 8350 in AMD. However since you are going to buy one of the two, I suggest the 6300.
The 6300 performs better than the said i7 920.
Also the 6300 would give you a chance at Overclocking incase you want to.

Really gamerk316? I have the FX-6300 and my previous CPU was the i7-920 and I can tell you with utmost certainty that the FX-6300 is at least a third faster in games that I play. i.e. Latest C.O.D. , Metro Last light, Skyrim and others. With all the other hardware being the same(video card, RAM amount/speed etc), there is no comparison. And here's a link you might find interesting between the two CPU's.

Check out the differences between the FX-6300 and i7-920 in the tests. So it isn't a "side grade", it's an upgrade.

How about something more recent? Early results are showing that even Nahalem is beating FX in games like GTA V, though it isn't being benched enough to really make a solid determination.

In any case, the improvement, if any, of a FX-6300 over a i7 920 isn't going to be worth the extra cost involved.

It IS an improvement and to post an answer that you did without backing up your statements isn't fair to the person posting a question on here. They are looking for truthful answers, not someone's opinion and possibly bias.

I can overclock my FX-6300 easily to 4.6GHz and I still run games better/faster. What's your point, bigdoxxic? Have you owned both processors and ran benchmark tests on both? I have, and please refer to my original answer to the original topic question.

the i7 will eat it alive in games that aren't well threaded, especially with a modest OC. in well threaded games they may be on par. If it were me, id take th i7 no probs, overclock it to 3.5ghz with a decent cooler, and it will be faster and cheaper than the 6300.
this may not help much because there aint a lot of recent benches:

but u can imagine Oc'ing that i7 how good it would be.

Multiple monitor setup is highly dependent on the GPU rather than the CPU.
The FX 6300 will still perform better in multiple monitor scenario as well....(Also the i7)

Yup, the X5650 is an amazing cpu for the price.

i would even be tempted to trade my 3570k +z97 on it for that price, let alone an fx6300. yes just imagine that sucker OC'd! I think this revelation has made the choice obvious.

that i7 is a first gen but its still pretty decent (only 2.66 ghz though, almost hits 3ghz turbo), going for about 50 bucks or so on ebay, when it was released probably close to $250 or so.

if it was a 2nd gen and newer it be a lot better, those are still selling for 200 bucks+, since they are still pretty good most of them being 3.1 to 3.5 ghz.

It's true that the multi is locked, but you can adjust the fsb (bclk). My first gen i7 is running at 3.8ghz and if I ever get dissatisfied with it's performance I'll just drop a hexacore in there :)

The main reason 1st gen cpus are so cheap is because lga1366 wasn't around for long and the motherboards are in short supply (and quite expensive). But also, I believe sandy bridge made some big improvements to hyperthreading and overall efficiency which is why any i5-2xxx or better is still a rockin cpu to own

It's a sidegrade at best. The i7 might be a little better in single threaded scenarios but the higher speed possible with the FX kind of negates that.

Power consumption wise it's also a wash. Go for the i7 since it's much cheaper.

Actually the FX6300 has better single threaded performance than the i7 920, both at stock clock speeds.

The FX6300 has about 1ghz over the 920, hence what I said.

Your statement is still incorrect. You dont compare a cpu and then set them to the same clock speed, you compare them at their stock clock speeds.
