I7-920 vs i5-3570k advice

Hi,

I'm in the process of buying a new gaming computer. Still can't make up my mind between x58 vs z77. I can get the i7-920 with a sabertooth mobo and ram all for $290 off of ebay. Whereas if i buy everything new, ivy bridge build could cost me about $415 for the i5-3570k, some $150 mobo and $50 ram.


Uses: Web browsing, college HW, Gaming @ 1920x1200.
I only wanna game on this computer with high settings for the next 3-5 years so i'll get a gtx 670.

What would you choose i7-920 vs i5-3570k? and why?

Generally speaking, Ivy bridge CPUs are on average almost 19% more powerful than 1st gen Core i3/i5/i7 CPUs; assuming the same clockspeeds.

That may or may not translate into better gaming performance depending on how CPU dependent the game is. Crysis 2 doesn't really care how powerful the CPU is as long as it is not slow enough to cause a bottleneck. So a Core i5-2500k @ stock speed vs. a Core i5-2500k @ 4.5GHz will likely be only 1 FPS slower, 2 FPS at best. However, Skyrim is a different matter, it benefits from both more powerful CPU and GPU. The difference with just the overclock could be as much as a 10% improvement in performance depending on what your graphics card can give you.

Is that possible 10% improvement in performance (Skyrim specific) worth the extra $$$ is up to you to decide. Me? I generally prefer to buy new parts rather than used parts so that at least I know they have not been excessively OC'ed. Or OC'ed at all.

The 3570K is in competition with the 3930K entitling it one the best gaming processors ever. As far as I know, the 3570K is cheaper also. If you want this PC to last for 3-5 years, then 3570K is the way to go. By then the first gen processors will be a drag. Also, a decent Z77 mobo for the 3570K doesn't have to cost $150. I got a z77-v lk for $70. It's pretty good. So overall I recommend the I5 3570K. Hope this helped!

the i7 920 is still very capable but not for long your better off with a 3930k u have to build your pc around a good cpu.

because thats the thing that usually costs the most and its the thing you want to be the most up to date u can always replace a graphics card or ram but cpu's u dont wanna be replacing them cos your gonna probably need a new motherboard as well then...

example games are now starting to use 6 cores for game rendering so i wouldn't buy a 4 core yes a 4 core like a i5 2500k will be fine for another couple of years but soon games will be fully useing 6 cores and then what happens your left with a pc that has a bottleneck. base your pc around a good 6 core 3930k 3960k or 3970k gl with it man

I say go with a 2500K - better overclocking capability than 3570K - they do perform better than the 920, and are more power efficient, plus you'll be much happier with new parts than used, older parts.

seriously you guys need to think what your saying yes your telling him get an 2500k but your not telling him what happens a year or 2 down the line when the processor is slow..

6 core is already being used in games and i doubt its long before all games design company's are using 6 core CPU's Telling him to buy a 2500k Just for the sake of price is very stupid in my opinion...

get a sick 8 core 4ghz factory setting out the box ezily overclocked to 5 Ghz for £150 its either spend a ton on a super powerful 6 core intel 3970 or get this http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-fx-8350-black-edition-vishera-8-core-s-am3plus-40ghz-16mb-total-cache-125w-retail which basicly does the same job for £600 cheaper hope that helps seriously if u dnt wanna spend £400+

it will be perfect for games and yes intel does provide maybe 10% better Cpu speeds but 10% really is'ent going to matter when its a 4Ghz x8 cores processor from AMD

You do know the percentage of performance increase these days is really small these days for each upcoming generation right? Plus, if you overclock the 2500K you'll probably have the same performance of a chip 2-3 years from now.

are u saying im wrong ?? i do know intel's CPu's are better but only by around 10-15% so if he overclocked the 8 core from 4000 to 5000ghz take away the 10% 4000mhz take away 10% 400 its not a lot... would be around a 8 core 4500mhz-4600mhz whats your opinion on this id like to hear why it made u laugh/your 10 minuets

LOL dude you are SOOO WRONG. AMD can't even KEEP UP the 8 core can't even triumph the Core i5 LET ALONE THE i7.
CAN YOU SEE THE 125W TDP? WHY WOULD YOU WANT THAT?!
The AMD FX 8350 can't come close, it's a nice processor but it ain't no 3570K or even 2500K.

the fps is only 10 behind a 2500k for most games so technically your talking bull...

also it would secure the the cpu's life because it has 8 cores it will be ready for all future games not that 8 is needed but i was just looking for a strong cheap cpu for this guy with more than 4 cores.

considering there's already games started using 6 cores do you understand were im coming from

Read it again, silly. The 3770K tops it in most of that, and it only slightly beats the Core i5 because it had more threads due too more cores - but even with that, most games don't even USE 4 threads. It's rare to see that. Buying an FX 8350 over a 2500K or 3570K is a HORRIBLE choice. The 2500K has worlds better single thread performance than it.

You're being ridiculous. Don't fanboy, everyone on this forum can agree that the FX 8350 can't top a 2500K, its a much better processor, and it'll be YEARS before games require 8 threads, a Core i3 can land you 50FPS with the right GPU at the moment.

im not fan boying im thinking of a future proof cpu considering as ive stated games are already starting to use 6 cores and he said he dident wanna spend alot of moeny and most intel 6 cores are £400+

A 3930K is unnecessary unless you run a home made server or do heavy video ending. Don't call me dumb when you're talking out your own ass, I'm sorry you're beloved Piledriver can't keep up with what Sandy Bridge brought to the table last year, friend.

my next Cpu will be 3970k for future proofing but if i dident have the money then id be getting a pile driver for the reasons ive stated plus a intel cpu 3970k is like £600 more than even the most expensive piledriver...

the stats are there its literally only 10 fpsish per game slower than a 2500/2600k series therefore the price being so cheap is a worth a buy and stop acting like im a fan boy of amd my cpu is a 2600k Oced to 4900mhz 1.35 volts vcore and stable so stop acting like its my beloved piledriver/im a fan boy its bull it sounds to me like your the real fan boy im going by facts/stats/price and frames per sec your going by the words coming out you're mouth... stupid
