Hi guys,

I'm going to upgrade my mobo cpu and gpu, my ram is actually fairly new currently and so I don't want to have to replace it initially if I don't have to.

My question: Will the i7 950 run worse with 4gb ddr3 1066hz? If so, how much worse? Would it be fine to just go ahead and grab the i7 then later get more ram in a years time or so?

Thanks!

It will because you're only running 2/3 channels and its not very fast ram, but for general desktop and gaming, the difference is very little.

What CPU do you have now?

Currently I have a core2duo e6750 @2.6ghz

Thinking of going:

Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) -
RetailGigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
Asus GeForce GTX 460 1024MB DirectCU GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

How much are using getting the 950? If its over $300, get a i7-930 instead, $200 at microenter, $290 others.

However, Id hold off on getting even the 930. If its mainly for gaming get a i5 750/760 instead, actually a tad better for most cases as the i7-9XXs main advantage is RAM.

Or wait for SB/BD, its not that far around the corner, maybe November/December for SB and May/June for BD.

The I7 in the UK got its price slashed down to $360 (£234). Btw I made an error with my RAM, it's actually 1333mhz. But I guess that's the same thing. Okay I guess I'll have to do more research if I want to avoid buying new RAM. Thanks for pointing me in a good direction >
