Hello Everyone, I have an old processor i7 950, and a sabertooth x58, and a Gtx 670 GC, I want to overclock it to 3.72 Ghz, so I was wondering can I just do that on stock cooler or do I need to buy a Coolermaster 212, or a liquid cooler, BTW never Overclocked anything before?

Thank You.

I wouldn't use the stock cooler. I upgraded my old i7 920 with the Thermalright Ultra 120 and hit 3.8GHz, then sold that to my parents and swapped the cooler out with the Hyper 212 and hit 3.4ghz, but temps get a little high. I am currently running a i7 970 (6-core) at 4.2GHz with lots of voltage using a NZXT X61 Kraken and the sucker never goes above 63C at 75% fanspeed under Prime95 testing. HIGHLY recommend water for those older chips especially if you plan on upping your voltage.

If your case has good air flow, then the Hyper 212 Evo will do a great job. If you don't have good air flow, then look into a water cooling loop.

I don't know anything about voltage and stuff, But I was watching a video and that guy said If I want to be under 3.8, I don't have to change any voltage.

That one will work. Personally, I use the H110i GTX from Corsair. But that is an expensive cooler however. I used to use the Corsair H60 (I think it is on sale at newegg currently) and it did a great job. I'm just a fan of Corsair. High quality products.

Just based on experience, you might have trouble getting that to run at a decent temp using the Hyper 212. My Thermalright Ultra was lapped and could barely handle 70C under load even with an upgraded 110CFM fan. Airflow was great using the Level 10 GT sitting in a cool basement. Obviously every chip is a little different, but I'm not sure the Hyper 212 is going to handle an overclocked 950 (it couldn't handle a 920 at 3.8ghz). To compare that to a modern CPU, the 950 has a TDW of 130 watts stock, while the Haswell-E 5820K 6-core chip clocks in at 140 watts TDP. The Hyper 212 Evo has a maximum TDP of 180 watts, so overclocking is going to really push you close to the edge of that cooler. Just my 2c.

Eh, again every chip is different. You may or may not have to increase voltage to reach 3.8GHz. The 950 is a higher quality bin vs the 920 so that may be true for you. You won't know until you start stress-testing.
