Hello, I currently have an i5 8400 and as black friday aproaches I was thinking about getting the i7 9700k and selling the i5
I have a b360 board that acording to the manufacturer(ASUS) site supports intel 9th gen with a bios update.
My question, that after extensive searching was not answered, is the following:
I know its likely that the mobo wont be able to sustain full turbo (4,6ghz) on the CPU due to power. But how much of a hit will it be on games/editing if the cpu did not reach its full turbo? Will it make the upgrade a bad idea? I am thinking of possibly getting a z390 board in a not so near future.
This is my complete rig. I hope someone could enlighten me on this matter. Thanks

Solution
You are good, and probably much better than you think.
With a 9700K at the very least, you get two additional threads.
Past that, the stock and boost clocks of the 9700K are much higher than the 8400.
My suggestion is to get the 9700K and see how you do.

If you need or want more, then the z390 upgrade is an option.
I know the 8700K could hit it's rated turbo on most B360 boards and, the 9700K isn't dramatically different in terms of power draw. I'd suspect it should be fine.

Do you actually have plans to 'upgrade' to Z370 or Z390? If you don't actually intend to overclock, I'd give serious consideration to an i7-8700 (non-K).
Drops clocks a little (3.2-4.6 opposed to 3.6 to 4.9) but nets you 6c/12t vs 6c/6t, and would be more than capable on your current motherboard long term. And it's <$300 vs ~$360 for the 9700K.

Thanks for answering Barry. In fact I do plan tô overclock If I get the K. As I Said, not in a Very near future, but If I get the 9700k i would like to be able to extract more of it when needed. Thats why i'm concerned it will perform considerably worst due to not being able to achieve high turbo clocks, after all it will months before i change the mobo. And regarding prices, where I live(Brazil), the 8700k and 9700k are the exact same price, and the 8700 non-k is just slightly cheaper

What i'm saying is that I plan to overclock when i buy a z board. I only wish to know is if until then, the performance of the 9700k will suffer too much from the b360 i already own. Get it?
