i7-9700k showing only 6 cores in CPU-Z, HW monitor, etc?

Just installed my brand spankin' new factory sealed i7-9700k. Loaded up CPU-Z, HW Monitor, and the performance tab in task manager... all are telling me the thing has 6 cores and 6 threads. Shouldn't it be 8? What's going on? Running it on a z370 mobo.

Many a new RYzen builder/owner was be met with no display/no Post condition with 2xxx series of Ryzens in B350/X370 boards....

If you just switched CPUs without reinstalling windows it might actually only see 6 cores if you had a 6core CPU before.

another poster put this solution to this issue the other day
go down to start button search box, type in " msconfig ", then clik on it to open it,
go to "Boot" > Advanced Options and uncheck box where it sez "number of processors"

if it's checked it's probably showing 6
