Hey, guys
This is my very tentative i7 SB build, with a purchase time about 2 months away. This should give me a good buffer for any price fluctuations to smooth out, and any problems that might rear their heads to, uh, rear their heads.
I'm looking to keep the budget at around $1500, give or take. Right now I am at $1600 through Newegg (preferred vendor), not including any tax or rebates. That is just about right, but I am flexible.
I'm using Visual Studio 2008, with an upgrade to VS 2010 maybe later. I am also using Mathematica, and will be learning CS5. I am not much of a gamer...mostly a flight sim enthusiast (Falcon 4 Allied Force mostly), but I can see maybe getting into some higher tier games. I run OpenOffice, and a very tricked out Firefox for browsing.
I might like to experiment with overclocking later, but not a primary consideration. I don't want to go the whole water cooled route, just tinkering around with the idea. I do want speed, of course, but would like run pretty much bare foot. I don't see SLI happening, because graphics are not my number one concern...but maybe later on? My monitor choice can handle 1920x1080, and that should be ok for now. I may go dual monitors later on, but not a big deal.
My target is somewhere between "good enough" and overkill. I don't replace / upgrade hardware every 3 months, but I want to be a little future proof. I don't mind overkill, especially with the CPU and mobo, but I do mind overkill with the GPU, for example. I mean, you can go to the grocery store with a 1964 Volkswagon bug, but it's much more fun to go in a Ferrari 550...if you know what I mean.
I am also very keen on stability. I am pretty sure that my chosen parts are compatible, and should be stable, but any advice on possible problems are very welcome!

I think that's everything. I will be running Windows 7 64 bit. Some quick notes on my choices:
I really like the Gigabyte UB7 board, might be overkill, and ASUS has very good products...but this is a case of "I just want it". Same goes for the i7; I guess I could save $100 and go with the i5, but I am thinking more of better speed and future proof here. And I just want it!
I originally wanted 12gb of RAM, but decided to go with 8gb for the time being. Latency and such seem fine for this board, but...any thoughts?
The case is a bit of a question for me. I don't really care for LEDs and such, I am mostly concerned with roominess and proper cooling here. Still looking around a bit.
GPU is a "good enough" part. I don't think I will need a second card, and I am pretty sure I don't need a hot rod.
I think that 700 watts is plenty for this build, and I like what I have read in the reviews about Cooler Master.
The ASUS monitor is very nice, and the resolution should be just fine for me, plus it has build in speakers, so I save a little here.
I think that's it. What do you folks think? I know that by the time we pull the trigger on this there will be new things coming out, like Win8, Ivy Bridge, etc., but this build seems robust and strong enough to last me for a good while.
Thanks for everything, and especially for this site...I am learning a lot here!
