OK so i built a i7 920 with the intel DBXso board 3gbs of ocz reaper memory. i am using the H50 water cooler and im getting temps of idle at around 45 to 55. I have replaced the thermal paste from stock to artic silver, had two other pc builders look at the computer as well as replace the thermal paste. I over rode the fans in bios so that there on full blast and still im seeing temps in the high forties. I have done other builds for people and i get temps of around 27 to 33 with the same cooler. Could my processor just be defective, i am not a over clocker i did scale the memory up to 1666 but after the heat issues i took everything back to default settings. The one wierd thing i noticed is that with the on board messing system from intel i am allways running at about a 20% load. does anyonehave a similar setup or know if any reasons i may be doing something wrong or is my processor just defective. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

Sounds like you might not have a problem. A couple questions though:
-what is your load temperature? use prime95 to load the cpu
-what program are you using to check? or is this in the bios? HWmonitor is a reliable program
-20% load? Can you figure out what program is using that in the task manager?
-what is your case and fan setup?

Other than that, I don't have much experience with i7 CPUs but that does sound within normal temperatures, albeit a little high. It's not dangerous. But let's see the load temperatures to double check.

Your temps seem a little high to me - I have an i7-920 in the pc I am using right now and cored temp shows 31/32 across all four cores - admittedly there is hardly any load.

I am using a Titan Fenrir HSF and have the Antec 1200 case.

Agreed, unless you have a very high ambient temperature, those are high idle temps.

As enzo suggested, find out what is causing you to "idle" at %20 CPU usage, that is not normal.

For reference, I am running an i7 920 @ 4 GHz and I idle around 36°C.

Using CoreTemp, HWMonitor or SpeedFan do you get the same temperature readings?

Ok so i found the load issue and i disabled turbo boost and got m temps down to high 30"s. i have the gaurdian 921 case from nzxt my ambient temps are thirties so i would imagine this is as low as its gonna go not sure where i can go from here...

That is good to hear, now, the problem really isn't what the temps are at idle (unless they are crazy high), but what your temps are when you stress the CPU. So, running Prime95 check what your cores max out at.
