So right now I'm mulling over if I should either get a new GPU or CPU, since most games are fine with my current 970, and are asking for a higher CPU than my i5-4690k. But almost all people say I should just go for the 1070/1080 instead since games aren't as CPU demanding as before. Current build is as follows (if you are curious):

GTX 970
i5-4690k
OCZ arc 100 SSD
Caviar blue hard-drive
EVGA bronze edition PSU
8 GB ram
MSI z97 gaming 5
and case if needed Fractal design r5

Plus I use a 1920x1080 monitor if that contributes to anything. Sorry if I respond late, and thank you in advance if I personally forget to do so!

Solution
The i7 isn't worth it if you're only gaming. Only bother with the i7 if you're doing video editing or something, otherwise the difference is negligible for the price.

With that out of the way, now you're looking at i5 6600k or 6500, which if it's between the new i5 or a 1070/1080, you go GPU. that's where you'll see the best returns for your investment. Later if you feel like upgrading the CPU, go for it. I think your best move is GPU though.

new GPU no question. A new cpu will barely make a difference in your frame rate. Your CPU will be good for a few more years to come so don't stress that. I still run a i7 3930K with dual GTX 980s on my primary rig and plan on 2 GTX 1080 Tis when they launch since i game at 4k with heavy filtering and i don't expect any issues since i only game at 60hz (using UHDTV). Only way a new CPU would help you was if you gamed at 144hz and even then it would only be about a 10% performance bump on your maximum frame rate your CPU is capable of (assuming your GPU can keep up which likely not) where as a new GPU could give you a lot more performance then that on your frame rate.

Seem to know your stuff, and all of what you said made sense, so I guess a GPU is in the picture at the moment, really appreciate the advice!

Got it, appreciate the CPU suggestion albeit you say to upgrade GPU, helpful for the future, thank you!
