APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Next 2 weeks
BUDGET RANGE: US$1200
SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: General Purpose, Longevity, Gaming (mostly strategy or things like The Sims), Programming, Surfing
PARTS NOT REQUIRED: keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, OS
PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: Newegg.Com or Frys, if too heavy to ship
PARTS PREFERENCES: I want to be able to easily upgrade after a year or two for a performance boost; overclocking, extra RAM, an extra Video Card, maybe adding an SSD as the OS and Application drive
OVERCLOCKING: In the future, probably
SLI OR CROSSFIRE: In the future, probably
MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1920x1200
CPU: i7-920 - $280
Motherboard: Asus P6T - $240 Is this okay for two 4870's in the future ?
Cooler: Xigmatek Dark Knight S1283V - $40 Seems like the best balance of performance and affordability.
Cooling Goo: Any suggestions ? I do not expect to need to replace the cooler so prefer something that lasts forever, I'm not planning to lap the CPU or Cooler, but may do so if I have to wait for parts and get bored.
RAM: OCZ 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3-1333 - $100 CAS of 7, 1.5V and a heatspreader - sounds ideal for the 920... or am I missing something ?
Video: Probably 4890 if I can get it for about $200. The 275 sounds like it will be a bit more expensive and may not be 100% available. However, is it wise to get newly released GPUs ? I would like the fastest single GPU solution I can afford since I may want to double it up sometime and I gather that 1 to 2 scales better than 2 to 4 (such as if I started with the 4850X2).
Hard Drive: WD Caviar Black 1TB - $120
Case: Cooler Master RC-690 - $80 Must have front panel e-Sata, preferably near the top since I tend to have it beside the desk and a screwdriver-less design. I could perhaps get the e-Sata on a flash card reader, but I suspect that these run at USB speeds rather than SATA.
PSU: Corsair 750TX - $110
UPS: I would like one that is affordable (up to $200) and will automatically shutdown the computer if there is an outage that lasts more than a few minutes, so it needs to be able to last long enough to do this. I have heard that there are issues with fake sine waves and active PFC PSUs, however. Any ideas or thoughts ?
Optical Drive: Lite-on 22x DVD Burner with Lightscribe (retail) - $30 I'll maybe get a Blu-Ray reader at some point in the future, the $100 premium isn't worth it to me at the moment.
Flash Card reader: Any suggestions ? I saw one with a built in e-Sata port, but I suspect that it actually runs at USB speeds which makes it useless to me (I have an external 1TB WD drive with USB and e-Sata options)
Total so far: about $1200 - I haven't updated all the prices since I originally wrote this.
Updated: Changed NZXT Tempest Case to Cooler Master RC-690, PSU from the 650TX to the 750TX (thanks for spotting the limited PCI power FullMetall) and RAM from Patriot to OCZ (same CAS and Voltage, better maximum speed, but $10 extra)
Also confirmed monitor and changed the GPU from 4870 to 4890.
