I'm using a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106124 cpu fan, with a i7 920, not overclocked, and it sits at 39-40 on all cores, in idle mode, and when under full load (using prime 95) all cores go to 68-70c. IS that norm? I get the feeling from what I've read and seen it's not. I have not reseated my fan yet, I will in the next few days when my new arctic silver comes in the mail. That is also what I'm using now. Not sure if it matter, but I'm using an x58 evga board.

Let me know if any more info would be needed. I just really can't find any straight answers out there about this. I want to overclock, but when it's this hot already, I don't want to attempt anything yet, even though I hear i7's can handle temps in the 80's fine? HEh, again I can't find any straightforward answers to any of these questions.

Thanks.

Your temps are safe but are disappointing. I use the XIGMATEK Dark Knight which keeps my stock idle temps at mid 30's so your not to far off there. However under full load I normally hit low 60's

My current overclock is at 3.33ghz and I idle around mid 40's which seems high but under full load I hit mid 60's. So my overclock is cooler than your stock... also note these are temps with all power saving features off.

My advise is to reapply the thermal paste and make sure you are properly mounting your heatsink.
