i7320 does not boot?

Hi *,

I bought a i7320 and equipped it with 2 Xeon Nocana 800MHz
3,2GHz 1MB L2 Cache CPUs. Unfortunately, the Board won't
start up; I did not plug in any USB devices and I did not
have any expansions cards installed.

The board even does not report errors via beep codes, the
CPU coolers start spinning and that's it until you switch
it off manually.

So the only thing I can think of now is the used RAM. First,
I tried to boot up without any RAM. Like above, nothing.
Then I tried the RAM from my old server:
- 512MB SingleSided PC2700 DDR CL2,5 Infineon (Non ECC,
Non Reg., unbuffered) in Bank 4A and 4B
-> nothing, like described above.

- 512MB DoubleSided PC3200 DDR CL3 Corsair (Non ECC, Non-
Reg., unbuffered) in Bank 4A and 4B
-> nothing, like described above.

Then I had a look into the "memory support" for my board
and the tested modules were *all* ECC, registered, buffered.
Can anyone verify that this board only boots when equipped
with RegECC RAM?
And can anyone verify that the board does *nothing* (not
even beep) if the wrong RAM is installed?

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

Did you find a solution?

I have exactly the same problems.

Tiger i7320.
1 3.2Ghz 800Mhz FSB xeon, with Dynatron H65 heatsink & fan.
Raidmax Samurai XE 901 case.
AMS Electronics EPS 12V 460W power supply (PP-4603-X).
Kingston 1GB ECC registered PC2700 DDR.

The CPU fan comes on, but nothing else happens and the board shuts
down after a few seconds. There are no beeps with or without memory. I
checked the speaker pins with a multimeter and there was no voltage;
no power was getting through to a floppy drive either.

Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ganesh.

Hi,

since yesterday, i also own such a board, with 2 Xeon-2800/1MB/800MHz,
and also encounter the same problems. Tried with RAM (non-reg/ecc, so
this really might be a problem) and without RAM. Not even the RAM
error beeps appear after power up. Tried lots of combinations of CPUs
(none, both, each CPU in either CPU1 or CPU2 slot), always the same
behaviour. Did you already had some success or other info about this
problem?

Which memory bank have you installed the chips into.

I had a similar problem till I read the manual and it said that you had to
start from bank 4.

Hope this helps

No. But i just forgot to finalize this thread :) That bank4 problem is
mentioned in the docs, and at least i would not ask for help in the
groups withouth RTFM :)

The problem is simple... I asked Tyan support, the board just doesn’t
do anything if no useable memory is found. Using registered ECC
modules completely solved the problem.
