Not sure if this is the right forum to ask this, is there another forum or area that's better suited?

I built my first pc in 15 years in April and was a bit of a learning curve, lost some hair in the process. There were some issues that I didn't resolve at the time as it seemed stable enough, I was able to complete the tasks I needed at the time and had enough of scrawling the internet for fixes. One of the main issues was the CPU overheating and constantly being 100 degrees (80ish when idle), but I read in a few places that the 13900k runs very hot and was not something to worry about so I moved on.

However I've had to do some rendering and getting the blue screen of death and the programme I've been using(sketchup/vray) has been frequently crashing. My first thought was to see if I can do something about the overheating cpu. I'm using a peerless assassin, I was thinking about upgrading to something more high end but from what I've read in various places it doesn't seem to be the issue here and it's not going to half my temps.

The crazy thing is everywhere is showing that my CPU is 12700k when it's a 13900k. In BIOS, CPUID, coretemp, task manager, device manager... everything reports it as the wrong processor. I just tried flashing the latest bios to no avail. Not really sure what other options I have, I've scoured the internet but there is very little out there. The box I have is for a 13900k, I'm more than certain when I looked at the back that's what was on the back. I dont have any paste to take it off and check atm but ordered some prime delivery. But I'm 95% sure it's the correct processor.

If all the things are pointing to a 12700k I would pull the cpu and inspect it. Where did you buy it?

I paid £585, but the box is a 13900k box. And I'm pretty sure the processor said so on the back

Not quite following this.

What CPU did you think you ordered?

Is 585 the correct price for the CPU you thought your ordered, whichever it was?

Did you receive what you thought you ordered?

I'm not clear on whether you intended a 13900K, paid 585 knowingly for a 13900K, and then received at 13700K?

I suppose Intel could pack a 13700K in a 13900K box.

And I suppose there could be some fraud/theft along the chain of custody.

Cpu software ID doesn't lie so perhaps there's a mistake made somewhere, most likely.

How much paste did you apply? Because usually the paste tube has enough for multiple applications. Just a small pea drop worth. If you put the whole lot on then that's probably why your temps are high as the paste being so thick isn't transfering heat quick enough. If that's the case then you'll have to redo this anyway and check the processor again. Can't continue to run it like that anyway.

I bought an i9 13900k processor. I received a 13900k as far as I'm aware, says so on the receipt, I have the box but I can't take it off just now to check as I don't have any paste to hand. But when I installed I'm 905 sure its a 13900k processor.

However it is showing on my system as an i7 13700k

Both the 13700k and 13900k have a option that lets them use unlimited power and they will pretty much thermal throttle on even large AIO coolers. It depends if you have been running any software to set the overclocking or maybe it is a setting in the bios. Some boards manufacture....asus :(.. set these values at the factory to overclocked values to make their board appear better to people who just run it out of the box.

Load hwinfo64 and look for 2 setting called PL1 and PL2. I am not 100% sure but I think the intel default settings are 125 and 253. If you see 4096 it is set to unlimited.

A lot of article say there is no issue letting it run at maximum but I am not so sure I believe that. I have tuned mine to keep the temps to never exceed 95 degrees.

If the pl1 and pl2 numbers are good then I would pull the cooler and repaste it. You want to look at the cpu chip anyway.
Key is going to be can your air cooler actually cool 253watts even if you set the pl1/pl2 limits down.

I was trying to underclock it earlier using intel xtu and that's where I saw I had the wrong chip. I have just took the cooler off and is infact a 13900k. Need to wait on paste tomorrow to try anything else now.

Would you recommend a better cooler then?
