Hi everybody,

I have a very specific hardware question I was hoping for the community's help on.

I am a data scientist and, for my work, my company is paying for me to get a 10-core i9-7900x, which is Intel's newest and fastest chip.

I currently have a i7-7700k on my desktop for computing. I need the i9 because otherwise it takes me hours to do database analyses.

Anyway - the question. This may sound absurd to even ask, but for someone who is very smart with CPUs, will this make my Warcraft (a) faster (b) slower (c) the same?

I have heard many people talk about how the game doesn't utilize multiple cores well and likes the higher clock speeds of 4.5-4.7ghz for the i7-7700k vs the 4-4.3ghz 10 cores for the i9-7900x.

i'm doing this anyway because I have to work and it's not about the money or the gaming first and foremost, but what can I expect the impact will be on my Warcraft play?

BTW this is not sarcastic or meant as a joke - I actually really wonder because I've heard some people say they went to slower clock speed 6 or 8 cores for work and lost anywhere up to 5-15% FPS on their games.

Thanks very much in advance

I don't believe there's any cpus faster than the 7700k currently...Threadripper is coming soon, it's highest offering will be the same price as the 7900x but it will have 16 cores and 32 threads and more PCIE lanes.

gtx 1080ti 1440p with i7-7700k and 10/7/7 settings and ultra i usually get 144fps which is my monitor max, but in raids it can sometimes dip down to 50. i'd say average is 100 in the new zones. old world is easy but legion xpac actually hits fps hard

Also one more question please - Thanks for all of this. Last question - I have heard so many conflicting reports of what is safe temp on i7-7700k. At load, with a noctua uh-15 i get 80-85c under full load, very very occasionally hit 89 or 90. It's 40 degrees when it's quiet. Is this safe and ok? I have heard this gen runs hotter. Temperature recovers within 5 seconds of finishing load. I have the chip oc'd to 4.7ghz vs 4.5ghz stock

Man, I know I'm a couple months late but I'm hoping you got it figured it by now. Your temps are pretty hot, 90 is the max your cPU is rated for, you don't want it to ever get that hot. If you want to overclock the 7700k,I definitely recommend having it delidded and the TIM replaced. Intel did a terrible job with the thermals on these chips, silicon lottery will do it for $40 plus shipping. For another $20 they will tell you the fastest you can run stable at on that CPU, although sometimes results may vary a bit. After having the TIM replaced, you will notice the temps get a lot lower. Before I got mine done, I was hitting 80 under load at stock settings, now I'm running my 7700k @5.1ghz and it doesn't break 64, granted I have a custom water loop now too but still, it's a world of difference. I can hit 5.2@ 1.44v and it will barely break 70

Those temps are a tad high for a 7700K, but, it is a smaller cooler, and, the temps are not dangerous...just a tad warm....

You could try slightly undervolting it just to see if it is still stable at stock clock speeds at 1.20 v fixed, for example...(vice the 1.27 that will be supplied when it ramps to 4.5 Ghz) ...every little bit less voltage helps...
