IBM 307030. How much faster with IDE100 ????

I own this cool hd. but i have only a bx board (asus) with udma 33. it´s worth the money,buying a udma100 controller or so???

I have an Asus P2B (UDMA33) and just bought an IBM 307045 and a Promise Ultra100 PCI controller card. All I have to say is <font color=red><b>WOW!</b></font color=red> The difference is more than noticeable. Pay the $45 for the controller, IT'S WORTH IT!

I threw my old drive on the card's second controller for paging, and both my CD-ROM drives are on the two on-board controllers. I've got Win98, NT4 Server, W2K Pro, and W2K Svr and they all have been working without a hitch.

yep, it depends on what you use it for, but that drive just barely breaks into the need for ATA-66 speeds on the transfer. The amount of data that can move through the controller in burst will be slower on ATA-33, but you should not be penalized a huge amount without ATA-66/100 controllers for the drive. Go to www.storagereview.com. There are many articles and posts in the forum on this subject. Also, it should be noted that the test bed system for them is using only a Promise ATA-66 controller card since they have not yet run into a drive that exceeds ATA-66 speeds on the IDE bus.

STR on hard drives is nowhere near ATA100 right now.

I just got the same setup as Hypnotic: IBM 75gxp 30G with the Promise 100 card and the difference is huge. This setup is great i love it

yeah but the inefficiency of older southbridges handling DMA along with the STR of the 75GXP might actually show some significant difference compared to an ATA 100 controller card(or ATA 66 but the 100 is not that much more). It's not a bad decision to grab a controller card, especially if you are going to keep the board for awhile longer.

That drive has a *maximum* data transfer rate 37 MB/sec, so you wouldn't need anything more than UMDA-66 (or ATA-66) and even with UMDA-66 (or UMDA-100), you would only see a difference of 4 MB/per sec (and that would only be at rare times of full load). You will only see minimal performance gains by upgrading the controller.

thats true but if hes going to get a udma66 card which like you said will do just fine why not spend that extra couple of $$$ and get the udma100. its not that big of a difference in price between the two and in the near future it might come in handy
