IDE cables

I am running some seriously processor hungry apps involving large amount of data transfers.
I was suspicious when i found the processor is being hit considerably harder when i use enhanced ide cables than if i was using standard. the speed of the transfers are neglible but the processor is taking a hit by up to 5 times as much.
i have the same results whilst using the unsupported Adaptec Threadmark... any ideas why??

do you have DMA on?
from what i gather it bypasses the cpu -> less strain on the cpu.
check out sone of the other threads, ive read it somewhere(in hard discks or MoBo's maybe?).

im kinda new to all this stuff anyway though so ignore everything i say.
