I would some options on how to get the best performance out of my hardware.
I have a CDR, DVDR (80 pin), and 2 hard drives (40 and 80 pin IDE).

Now I have two controllers on my mobo and don't know the best way of setting them up.

I was told to have the HD's on separate controller at the end of the cable. But is my schooling correct?

Yeah, always a tough call. I really like to add a controller card, use a mobo with 4 ide contollers, or use SATA drives to keep everything a master(single). But in your case I would combine the two HDD's off each other and the two opticals onto the second IDE channel. Then test the burning on both opticals making sure they both work well. If you plan on doing loads of disc to disc copying on the fly you may want to split the opticals up. But unless they DVD-+r is has a fast read speed, you might not even see the difference. Honestly, I think you will have a hard time (depending on the case) of slaving the two opticals off of the two HDD's without using brackets to mount a HDD up in the 5.25" bay or using longer 24" IDE cable which aren't always the best either. It's almost physically impossible to mount the HDD's down in the 3.5" bays, use 18" IDE cables, and slave the opticals off of the HDDs. If not impossible, it will be a test of patience and the finished product will be a mess of wires restricing airflow. (I am a neat-wire freak)

Most new ide hdds require an 80 pin cable, while optical drives do not need the extra conductors. If you only have a single 80 conductor cable, you have to put bothe hdds on it. If you put an hdd on a 40 pin cable, it will default to ata33. Too slow.

Thanks.
Picked some 80pin IDE after finding out that my DVDR requires one.

Not knowing the diff I have been running on 40pins so with some luck maybe I will unlock some power with 80pin.

The extra wires are only used as shield between live wire to prevent interferences at high frequency, as at ATA100, the bits move too fast for a 40 wires, and a wire can affect the ones nest to it and cause data corruption. they are not connected in any way to the motherboard, as IDE connector only has 40 pins.

Just like if one wire was the emitter and the next one the antenna.

-Always put the blame on you first, then on the hardware !!!
