I was wondering why Win2k won't let me put my IBM hard drive or my burner in DMA mode ....I went to the device manager and told it to put it to dma rebooted and it's still in PIO mode. Any suggestions what to do?

Make sure you have enabled DMA for the IDE channels in BIOS. The POST screen should show you this. Also do your HDD and burner support DMA? Most new drives do.

well, I should have mentioned this earlier but it slipped my mind. I have 4 drives total I have 2 hard drives on my primary and 2 cd rom drives on my secondary. 1 hdd is IBM 1 Is western dig 1 cdrom is just a Sony Cdrom drive and 1 is my Ricoh combo drive. The western dig and sony will go into dma while the other two will not, they remain in pio......I know both the drives that aren't in dma do support it it's just for some silly reason that I don't know of is causing those 2 drives to stay in pio when I set em to go into DMA

There could be many reasons why you can't set the drives to DMA. Maybe that the drives aren't on the hardware compatibility list and Win2000 default them to the PIO failsafe mode. Maybe your BIOS is not the latest version which needs an update. Btw, are you using Win2000 SP2 or later? I heard that there are some bugs with earlier versions of W2K which incorrectly shows a DMA capable device as PIO mode. You can also try disconnect the problem devices from your PC, re-boot, shutdown, re-connect the devices and re-boot again and let Windows detects them. I am not sure if this would help but its worth a try.

The 2 drives in question have been in dma in 2k before just not with this install. Yes SP2

I figured it out. The silly motherboard settings didn't take and now they did. I set it in the BIOS to go to DMA and also had it set to DMA in Win2k but it didn't take after I rebooted when all the settings were in. It has now for whatever reason. I guess that's what you get with M$. You do it right and it takes an hour to realize what you told it to do and then does it. Thanks for the help though
