Hi, i currently have a crappy pc lying around that my brother uses for playing csgo,
It was working just fine until yesterday when the ide drive that holds the os wont boot up, i also have a sata slave drive. I ran some tests a week back on both the drives and both showed healthy status. I tried plugging off the sata drive but couldn't get anything on the display, all the fans run and everything works just fine. Although as soon as i plug out the ide drive the pc boots just fine, is the drive dead or can a bad cable cause this problem, i might have some data on that drive which in my insanity i forgot to backup, can anyone help me on this?

Solution
Yes cables and power can also cause problems but judging by symptoms control board has serious problem. It was practically impossible to find the board except at manufacturer, now it's much worse since they are not produced for many years. You'll have to find an identical second hand HDD and swap boards. In the mean time check little caps on board settings connectors on the drive (next to data cable) and try changing to Master, Slave or cable select.
Best way would be to plug that HDD in some other computer or to get an USB adapter but with those symptoms prognosis is not good. If you have very important files on it, it's possible with IDE drives to change it's control board with another one from identical drive.

Yea i might have some stuff i need to.backup before i change to another drive, is there any chance if a cable causes this or no? I might try and run it in my pc as soon as i get an ide cable, might as well try the adapter too. Any idea how much the control board costs?
