If you have a UDMA 100 or 133 mobo, can you use it with any HDs? I have a UDMA 100 mobo and wonder if I can use it at that speed with a 1996 1.2 Gig hard drive.
Yes, It will work, but not running at ATA100, I think your drive is EIDE.
Why do you need to put that small drive to your system? Be careful, don't put important data in it, since it is old, it will crash at anytime
As said it will work but you will not benefit from the ata 100 capacity of your chipset. In bios set to "autodetect HD", also for "mode" set to "auto" and if bios set the mode to PIO 4 and you have data trouble, set manually to PIO 3. It will be ever so slightly slower, but stable.
If you have no bad sectors on that DD, you may go for many years more. Just do scandisk for bad sectors once a month min.
Chow!
A 1996 drive seems quite old - it could go kaput on you at any time. The "typical" lifespan of a drive is about 5 years. I say "typical" because it can still vary from that.
