Question IDE to USB adapter

I was hoping someone could assist me with some experience with HD to USB adapters. I have an old Western Digital Caviar WD400BB that I would like to get into to see what's on there. I'm reading about these IDE ATA to USB adapters and seeing that some are not reading some WD Caviar. Does anyone have any knowledge/experience with this or know of any specific brand that would be able to read this hard drive? or is this a hit or miss thing? I'm also reading some are completely messing up machines. Any help would be greatly appreciated

these are all hit and miss from my experience. That is why I keep my old Dell XPS around to read IDE if I need to.
